Dayton hangs on for 79-76 win over Toledo in home opener

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women’s basketball team topped Toledo 79-76 Wednesday night at UD Arena in the Flyers’ home opener to improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Sophomore Andrea Hoover equaled her career high in points; notching a game-high 22 points in the victory. Sophomore Ally Malott had 16 points, including eight in the final four minutes of the game. Junior Cassie Sant also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Toledo came out early with a 9-0 run against the Flyers during the first three minutes of the game, and extended its early lead to 18-12. UD’s six-point run was capped by Amber Deane’s three-pointer with 11:14 left in the half, to tie the game at 18 all.

The Flyers took their first lead of the game, 36-35, on Sant’s basket with 1:41 remaining in the first half. Dayton took a 41-40 lead into the half.
The Rockets pulled ahead early the second half, taking a 51-45 lead five minutes into the second half.
Sam MacKay scored two consecutive three-pointers to spark the UD offense and pull Dayton within four, 55-51 with 12 minutes remaining.
Trailing 67-60, Sant hit a jumper and drew a foul to cut the deficit to four once again 67-63.
In the last four minutes of the game, Malott scored eight points, gaining the lead for the Flyers 73-71.
The Rockets hit two consecutive free throws tying the game at 73 with 1:37 left in the game.
Hoover and Kelley Austria regained the lead for the Flyers with two free throws apiece, putting Dayton ahead 77-73 with 58 seconds remaining on the clock.
Hoover was fouled with just four seconds left on the clock, and made both of her free throws to lift Dayton to a 79-76 victory over Toledo.

The Flyers shot 19-of-19 from the free throw line, including 15-of-15 in the second half.

The Flyers are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. ET against the No. 13/16 Vanderbilt Commodores. The game will be streamed free of charge on DaytonFlyers.com.
