CHICAGO – Every Flyer scored as the University of Dayton women’s basketball team won its season opener, 93-59, over Mississippi Valley State (0-1) Friday night in the first game of the Maggie Dixon Classic at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Sophomores Ally Malott and Andrea Hoover both had career highs in the victory for the Flyers. Malott scored a career-best 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Hoover tallied her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Senior Sam MacKay also had a career-high seven assists.
Five different Flyers scored in double-figures: Malott (19), freshman Amber Deane (14), freshman Jodie Cornelie (11), redshirt senior Brittany Wilson (11) and Hoover (10).
The Flyers (1-0) kicked off the 2012-13 season with back-to-back three-pointers by Deane and Hoover to jump out to a 6-0 lead over MVSU.
The Devilettes fought back to get within one; Dayton held just an 8-7 lead at the 16:41 mark but used a 23-6 run to pull away 31-15 with 9:16 left in the first half.
The Flyers led 42-26 at the half paced by Deane’s 12 points. She shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in the first half, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Redshirt senior Brittany Wilson, who was also a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line, had 11 points at the half and Malott also had 10 for three Flyers in double figure scoring at the half.
Dayton never looked back and led by as many as 36 points late in the game.
The Flyers shot 57 percent from the field, including 55.6 percent from three-point range (10-of-18). Dayton also crushed MVSU on the boards 53-22.
UD plays tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET in the Maggie Dixon Championship game against either host No. 25 DePaul or Nicholls State.
