CINCINNATI – The Xavier Musketeer hammered out the 67-51 victory against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds during the two team’s exhibition game Saturday at Cintas Center. Shatyra Hawkes had a game-high 17 points from 7-of-11 from the field.
This was the Musketeers only exhibition game of the season. Xavier will begin its regular season next Saturday at Cintas Center against Bucknell.
Hawkes was one of three Musketeers to finish with double-digit points. Jessica Pachkoand Lakeisha Crouch each ended with 10 points. Crouch nearly missed her double-double with nine rebounds and led the game with six assists. Hawkes also dished off a game-high six dimes. Pachko corralled six rebounds and shot 4-of-8 from the field.
Freshman Jenna Crittendon had a game-high 31 minutes were she added five points, four rebounds, and played sound defense with two steals. Freshman Aliyah Zantt had eight points from 4-of-5 from the field and two steals.
The Musketeers outshot the Greyhounds 45.9 percent to 32 percent in the field. Xavier was consist in getting defense stops and was able to force 24 turnovers. XU had 17 steals to UIndy’s five. XU finished with 16 assists to UIndy’s 11.
The Musketeers were scoring at will to begin the second half as they began the half with an 8-2 run. XU never looked back as they forced 12 second half turnovers and connected on 15-of-31 (48.4 percent) from the field in the second half.
Xavier and Indianapolis entered intermission with the score being 31-24 in favor of the Musketeers. XU had its largest lead of the first half, leading by seven entering halftime.
Pachko lead Xavier with nine points off of four-of-six from the field in the first half. Xavier closed out the first half with a 9-3 run and made seven of its last 10 shots.
XU was able to swipe five steals in the first eight minutes of the match, and held UI to 10 points. The Musketeers finished the first half with nine steals. Crouch was responsible for four of the nine steals.
The Greyhounds kept it close to start to game, holding the Musketeers to only seven points in the first ten minutes. IU had a 10-7 lead with 12:32 to play in the first half. However, XU grinded its way back to take a 20-15 advantage off of a Hawkes three-pointer in the right corner with 4:40 left in the first half.
