HORNELL, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers clinched the Western Division regular season championship with a 10-2 victory over the Geneva Twins on Tuesday night. The Dodgers will be the #1 seed in the West and will face #4 Geneva in a best of three series starting on Friday.
The Dodgers got on the board in the third. Alex Moore (NC Central) scored when Cody Stevenson’s (Webster) sac bunt was thrown down the line and allowed Moore to score from first. Two batters later, Matt Calhoun (Harding) made it 3-0 when he hit his team leading seventh homer.
Geneva scored a single run In the fourth, but Hornell responded back and added two runs on a fielding error that scored Stevenson and Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher).
The Dodgers put the game out of reach in the third when they scored three more. Tyler Stanford (Harding) came home on a throwing error; Stevenson scored on a wild pitch, and Roeder hit a sac fly.
Geneva plated a run in the eighth to cut it to 8-2, but Hornell answered with two more runs on a two runs single by Stanford.
Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) and Ben Gielow (Ouachita Baptist) were each three-for-five on the day. Roeder was two-for-four with an RBI, Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) was two-for-five, and Calhoun finished with three RBI.
Matt Danton (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) tossed five solid innings allowing four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out two. Jake Brandenberger (Flagler) tossed two scoreless innings and Aaron Benton (St. John Fisher) got the final six outs to close the game.
No Geneva hitter had multiple hits. Cody Walker and Max Townley drove in runs for the Twins.
The Dodgers close out the regular season on Wednesday when they host the Lake Shore Ridgemen (AIA) at 7 p.m. It is Fan Appreciation Night and 50 cent hot dog night.
