UTICA, N.Y. — Adirondack’s Trail Blazers scored three in the third on the way to a 9-6 victory over the Utica Brewers in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Donovan Stadium, Friday night.
Colton Campbell (Rogers St.) and Chase Matheson (McHenry County) knocked back-to-back RBI doubles sparking Adirondack in the third. Campbell plated Kenny May (Lincoln U.) and came home on Matheson’s drive. Adirondack led 5-2.
May doubled home Dezmon Nunn (Three Rivers CC) with the first run of the frame.
Campbell doubled and scored Matheson in the fifth as the Trail Blazers added an insurance run.
Adirondack added two more in the seventh. Cody Campbell (Rogers St.) came home on a sacrifice fly by Matheson, and Gooch Greer (Carson-Newman) used a sacrifice to bring home Colton Campbell.
Jabin Weaver (East Stroudsburg) started and went six and a third for the win. The right-hander allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned). He is 2-1 on the season.
Geoff Soja (Niagara) worked a scoreless ninth for the save, but it was not without some drama.
Kenny Durling (Misericordia) doubled to lead the stanza. Jess Pintado (Miami Dade) walked, and the tying run came to the plate. Soja induced a double play and got the final batter on a ground ball.
The save was Soja’s seventh on the season. He is tied for the league lead with Hornell’s Kevin Johnson.
Utica scored three in the seventh.
Stephen Dezzi (Univ. of Tampa) led with a walk and scored on a ground out by Durling. Matt Bahnick (Tallahasee CC) singled and scored on a triple by Pintado. Pintado eventually came home on a wild pitch.
Miguel Navarro (Mt. San Jacinto JC) took the loss. Navarro could not get out of the fifth. He allowed eight hits and six earned runs.
May and Stewart Knight (Daytona St.) had three hits apiece for the Trail Blazers.
Bahnick led Utica with three hits.
Colton Campbell and Matheson had two RBI for the winners.
Durling drove in two in a losing effort.
With the victory, Adirondack (20-14) moves a game ahead of Utica (19-16) in the battle for second place in the NYCBL Eastern Division.
Adirondack hosts the first-place Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (25-8), Saturday night. First pitch at the Robert Smith Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Utica travels to Geneva to take on the Red Wings (12-22). Game time is also 7 p.m. at McDonough Park.
