HORNELL, N.Y. — Nick Boyd (Central Connecticut State) earned his league leading sixth victory with 8.2 innings of work as the Hornell Dodgers defeated the Wellsville Nitros 4-1. The Dodgers are now 21-10 and have a three-game lead on second place Olean (18-13).
Boyd allowed six hits in 8.2 innings of work to improve to 6-1 on the season. He took a shutout into the ninth inning before the Nitros loaded the bases and got an RBI single by Kory Wan. He allowed four walks and struck out five. Boyd is the first Dodger starter to pitch into the 9th inning.
Ben Gielow (Ouachita Baptist) came in and recorded the final out via the strikeout in his first appearance of the season.
The Dodgers got all the offense they needed in the 3rd inning when Luke Feisal (Wofford) doubled home two runs after singles by Tyler Stanford (Harding), Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher), and Cody Stevenson (Webster). Hornell made it 3-0 when Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh) scored on a wild pitch.
Stevenson made it 4-0 in the fourth when he had a two-out RBI bunt single.
Roeder was two-for-three, Stanford was two-for-four, and Stevenson was two-for-four with an RBI.
Riley Goulding was two-for-three for the NItros. TJ Hunt tossed the first seven innings for Wellsville allowing nine hits and four runs.
Hornell begins a three-game road trip on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at Basket Road Field vs. the Lake Ontario Ridgemen.
