SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Six outs separated the Adirondack TrailBlazers from being swept in a doubleheader.
Fortunes changed quickly for the Adirondack nine.
Bobby McLaughlin (Alderson-Broaddus) connected on an RBI two-out single in the eighth as the Trail Blazers plated eight runs in the final two innings to defeat the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, 9-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Alliance Bank Stadium.
McLaughlin’s hit brought home Matthew Robinson (Georgia Coll & St. U.) and Colton Campbell (Rogers St.) as the Trail Blazers tied the score at three.
Stewart Knight sparked a six-run ninth as the Trail Blazers put away the game. Knight’s one-out double scored Eric Baker (Rogers St.) and Kenny May (Lincoln).
Gooch Greer (Carson-Newman) capped the outburst with a base hit delivering Campbell and Dezmon Nunn (Three Rivers CC).
Ryan Krokos (Youngstown St.) tossed a scoreless eighth for his first win of the season.
Geoff Soja (Niagara) retired the side in the ninth.
McLaughlin finished three-for four with three RBI.
Campbell went two-for-four with two runs scored.
Syracuse took the opener 7-5. The Jr. Chiefs put crooked numbers on the board in the third, fifth and seventh.
Brian Witkowski (Alvernia) singled and scored Alexander Sanchez Jr. (Ave Maria) and Zach Lauricella (St. John’s) as the Jr. Chiefs took a four-run lead in the fifth that they never surrendered.
Peter Doggett (Misericordia) struck out seven in seven full for his second win of the season.
Kevin Carroll (Le Moyne) retired the only two batters he faced for his second save of the season.
Sanchez, Jr. finished three-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored.
Cody Campbell (Rogers St.) went three-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored.
Both teams will break for the league all-star game.
The Jr. Chiefs (18-6) visit Falcon Park for a 7 p.m. game Thursday night with the Syracuse Salt Cats (10-17).
Adirondack (15-13) and the Jr. Chiefs play another double dip Friday night at the Robert Smith Sports Complex in Boonville.
