HORNELL, N.Y. — The Geneva Twins used a big inning in each game to sweep the Hornell Dodgers in a Sunday doubleheader. The Twins scored five in the 6th inning en route to a 6-2 victory in game one and used a four-run fifth in game two en route to an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Hornell got on the board first with two runs in the 5th inning. Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) collected a bases loaded two-run single.
Geneva bounced right back in the top of the sixth and plated five runs. Harrison Guiol had an RBI triple and Mike Allen hit a two-run homer in the inning.
Justin Ratte allowed two earned runs in six innings to earn the win while Alex Juday recorded the save by recording the final four outs (striking out two). Guiol and Issac Behme were each two-for-four for the Twins.
Hornell’s Nick Boyd (Central Connecticut State) struck out seven in 6.2 innings but took the loss. Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh) was three-for-five while Danford, Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall), and Tyler Stanford (Harding) were all two-for-four.
In the nightcap, the Twins scored four in the fifth inning to break up a pitcher’s duel. The Dodgers looked to get right back in the game in the 6th inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. After two fly outs, Benenson drove in a run with an RBI infield single and Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown) was hit by a pitch to cut the lead in half, but the Dodgers could not get any closer.
Geneva put the game out of reach with two more runs in the seventh and added two more insurance runs in the ninth.
Brandon Martinez was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and Joe Chinni drove in two runs to pace the Twins while Luke Feisal (Wofford) was two-for-four for the Dodgers. Hornell stranded seven runners on base in the nightcap.
Anthony Dovale earned the victory with five innings of work. Six Twin relievers combined to toss the final four innings to close the game. They allowed just three hits in the four innings.
The Dodgers head to the All-Star break with a 19-9 record and have a 2.5 game lead over 2nd place Olean. Geneva moved into third with the sweep with a 14-15 record.
