St. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Jon Kemmer (Clarion) continued his torrid hitting as the Olean Oilers defeated the Lake Ontario Ridgemen, 11-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Fred Handler Park, Saturday.
Kemmer walked and scored in a seven-run second where the Oilers sent a dozen batters to the plate. Mike Scarello (Univ of Buffalo) led with the first of four consecutive singles. Jose Alicea (Genesee CC), Brian Dixon (New Orleans) and Seth Heck (Tacoma CC) followed Scarello’s lead to load the bases. Brennan Henry (Northeastern JC) was forced to respect Kemmer, the league’s leading RBI man. Kemmer got an RBI anyway with a bases-loaded walk.
The Oilers continued to slick the basepaths.
Dixon scored on a wild pitch before Stephan Adams (Tacoma CC) plated Heck with a hit. Pat Welsh (Marist) singled and Kemmer came home. Thomas Richards (Univ of Buffalo) capped the inning with a double scoring Adams and Welsh.
Kemmer connected with a solo shot in the third.
Olean stretched the lead to double digits in the fifth. Rush doubled home Heck, and Olean led 11-1.
The Ridgemen put crooked numbers on the board in the seventh and eighth.
Trevor Keele (U of Dallas) came home on an error, and Christian Lichtenthaler (Lower Columbia Coll) plated Cayden Cuniff (East Texas Baptist) with a sacrifice fly.
In the eighth, Keele doubled and scored Joel Belk (Asuza Pacific) and Nick Flanagan (Martin Methodist).
Ruben Medina (Genesee CC) struck out six, walked one and allowed three runs (one earned) over seven innings for the win.
Henry surrendered 10 hits and nine runs in an inning and two-thirds for the loss. Henry was making his first start after a significant layoff. The Denver, Colorado native was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 25th round of the 2012 MLB Draft.
Kemmer finished two-for-two with three walks, three runs scored and two RBI. He leads the NYCBL with 37 RBI. Kemmer’s .462 batting average is second in the league.
Rush went two-for-five with three RBI.
Olean (15-10) hosts a doubleheader against Niagara (12-13) on Sunday. First pitch at Handler Park is set for 3 p.m. The twin bill is Niagara’s second of three consecutive double dips. Fortunately for the Power they played just one on Saturday before rain forced a postponement of game two against Wellsville.
The Ridegemen (8-17) play at Wellsville (12-16) on Sunday. Asa Johnson (St. Bonaventure) gets the start for Lake Ontario. Anthony Galan (Brown) takes the ball for the Nitros.
