St. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Michael Fries (Butler) and Kory Wan (St. Leo) paced a 13-hit attack as the Wellsville Nitros defeated the Olean Oilers, 13-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Fred Handler Park, Friday night.
Fries and Wan each had a hand in a five-run second as the Nitros took a commanding 7-1 lead. Riley Goulding (Texas Pan American) and Fries started the frame with back-to-back singles. After a fielder’s choice erased Goulding, Kolin McMillen (Mercyhurst) doubled bring home Fries and Chandler Sidwell (Concordia). Wan plated McMillen with a base hit, and Montana Timmons (Wabash) capped the inning with a two-run home run.
Wellsville added three each in the third and seventh. McMillen and Wan hit back-to-back two-out doubles in the third. McMillen brought home Sidwell and Nicholas Gill (St. Leo). Wan’s two-bagger scored McMillen.
Sidwell homered in the seventh to score Fries and Goulding.
T.J. Hunt (Monmouth) struck out eight and walked one over six and two-thirds for his second win of the season.
Matt Fischman (Quincy) tossed two shutout innings to finish the game for Wellsville.
McMillen went two-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored.
Fries and Wan each went three-for-five. Wan had two RBI and two runs scored. Fries crossed the dish twice.
Joe Pantano (Erie CC) led Olean with three hits in five trips.
Jon Kemmer (Clarion) added to his league-leading total with two RBI. Kemmer has 35 runs driven in on the season.
The Nitros jumped on Olean starter, Mike Tolsma (Canisius), for 10 runs in two and two-thirds. Last time out, Tolsma took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.
Olean (14-10) sits three and half behind first-place Hornell in the NYCBL’ Western Division. The Oilers host the Lake Ontario Ridgemen on Saturday. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Wellsville (11-16) welcomes the Niagara Power (12-12) for a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is slated for a 1p.m. start.
