NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers used a five-run third inning to propel themselves to a 7-4 victory over the Niagara Power on Saturday evening. The win improves the Dodgers to 16-6 on the year and 9-4 on the road.
Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) tripled in the 2nd and scored on a RBI ground out by Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) to get the Blue & White on the board.
In the third, the Dodgers sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs. Justin Gonzalez (U of Buffalo) walked to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch, Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) and Benenson each had RBI singles, Dunn walked with the bases loaded, and Tyler Stanford (Harding) connected on a sac fly.
Niagara got on the board in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch but the Dodgers answered right back in the fourth on an RBI single by Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher).
The Power chipped away in the late innings scoring single runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th and loading the bases in the 9th but could not get any closer than 7-4.
Jake Brandenberger (Flagler) went 5.1 innings of five hit ball to earn the victory. He allowed two runs and two walks while striking out eight Power hitters. Aaron Benton (St. John Fisher) went 1.2 innings, Tyler Wilson (Monroe CC) pitched the eighth, and Kevin Johnson (Pittsbugh) stranded the bases loaded to close out the game in the ninth.
Benenson finished the day three-for-four with an RBI while Cody Stevenson (Webster) was two-for-five. Dunn finished with two RBI.
Chane Lynch led the Power’s 11-hit attack with a two-for-four day while Adam Taylor was two-for-five. Reliever Seth Eller kept Niagara in the game with five solid innings of two hit relief. He allowed one run, walked two, and struck out six. The loss snapped the Powers four-game winning streak.
The Dodgers finish off their three-game road trip on Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest at 2nd place Olean. The Oilers won a 21-17 decision over Wellsville on Saturday and sit 2.5 games behind the Dodgers in the Western Division standings.
