HORNELL, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers saw an 11-1 lead disappear in the fifth inning but rallied for two runs in the ninth to down the Geneva Twins 14-13. The Dodgers improve to 14-6 halfway through the 2012 season.
After the Twins got on the board with a single run in the 1st, the Dodgers took advantage of three Geneva errors and scored seven runs to take a 7-1 lead. Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) connected on a three-run triple to highlight the inning.
The Dodgers added three more runs in the 3rd with RBI singles by Roeder, Heath Burton (Furman), and Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh). Matt Calhoun (Harding) made it 11-1 in the fourth when he scored on a wild pitch.
The Twins exploded in the 5th inning. They sent 17 batters to the plate, hit two homers, four doubles, and scored eight runs prior to the Dodgers recording an out. The 12-run inning also featured three hit batters, a walk, and four pitchers.
The Dodgers threatened to cut the Twins lead in the fifth and seventh inning but could not get anything on the board.
In the eighth, Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) hit a solo homer, his second of the season, to make it 13-12.
Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) singled to lead off the 9th for Hornell. Pinch runner Jake Kenney (Hagerstown CC) moved to single following a sac bunt by Roeder. Cody Stevenson (Webster) tied the game when he connected on his second triple of the game. He came in to score to win the game when a 0-2 pitch bounced away from the catcher.
Kevin Johnson was spectacular out of the pen for the Dodgers and earned the win. He tossed 4.2 innings allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Stevenson finished four-for-six with two RBI, Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) was three-for-five, Roeder was two-for-three with four RBI and Calhoun was two-for-three with an RBI.
Nick Kranick was three-for-five with a long three run homer in the fifth for Geneva. Brandon Martinez was three-for-four and Taylor Nichols was two-for-five with three RBI.
The Dodgers hit the road for the weekend starting with a 5 p.m. contest with second place Olean. Hornell and Olean have split their tirst two contests with each team winning on the road.
