HORNELL, N.Y. –The Hornell Dodgers scored four runs in each the fifth and sixth innings and downed the Wellsville Nitros 8-3 to win their fourth straight contest. The Dodgers are now 12-5 on the season and lead the Western Division by one game.
The Nitros took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) put the Dodgers in the lead for good when he connected on a three-run homer in the fifth. After a Matt Calhoun (Harding) double, Dylan Drayton (NC Central) made it 4-0 with a bad hop single.
Wellsville clawed right back into the game with two runs in the sixth but the Dodgers batted around in the sixth and scored four more to take full control of the game. Cody Stevenson (Webster) had a RBI single, Danford drove home two with a single, and Calhoun had a RBI bloop single.
Nick Boyd (Central Connecticut) pitched 5.2 solid innings to earn his fourth win of the season. He allowed two earned runs, five hits, and three walks while striking out three. Aaron Benton (St. John Fisher) had a solid outing out of the pen tossing 2.1 innings of one hit ball. Newcomer Jordan Quinn (Southeastern CC) tossed a perfect ninth to seal the victory.
Danford finished the night three-for-five with five RBI while Stevenson and Calhoun were each three-for-four with an RBI.
Montana Timmons led Wellsville with a 2 for 4 night. The Nitros are now 8-12 on the year.
Hornell travels to Webster to take AIA on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Basket Road Field.
Hornell hosts Wellsville on Wednesday. The game is free admission to all fans courtesy of IOOF/Rebekah Lodge. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
