GENEVA, N.Y. – The Geneva Twins entered play Saturday night looking to climb within one game of the first-place Hornell Dodgers. Instead the denizens of McDonough Park found themselves three games out in third place.
Such is life in the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s Western Division.
Trevor Keele (University of Dallas) keyed a four-run third inning as the Rochester Athletes in Action downed the Twins 9-6 in NYCBL action at the “Big Mac.”
Keele’s one-out double plated Zac Goodno (Indian River St.) and Nick Flanagan (Martin Methodist) as the AIA grabbed a lead never surrendered.
Rochester added two more before they were finished. Joel Belk (Azusa Pacific) followed Keele with a double of his own, and the visitors led 5-2. Frank Dreslinski (Rend Lake) added to the advantage with a two-out single to bring home Belk.
The AIA stretched the lead with three in the fifth. Jordan Doherty (Mt. Vernon Nazarene) singled and scored Josh Davis (Whitworth). After Dreslinski moved Doherty and Belk with a sacrifice, Jonathan Burkhardt (East Texas Baptist) doubled for a 9-2 bulge.
Taylor Nichols (Alabama) homered in the first to give the Twins a 2-1 early edge. Carsen Bumgardner (Bucknell) scored on the play.
Geneva rallied with four runs in the final three at bats. Doug Beath (Oakland) plated Harrison Guiol (San Diego) with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Geneva took advantage of two passed balls for three more runs.
Patrick Woerner (Illinois Springfield) worked sixth and a third for the win. The right-hander struck out seven, walked one and allowed three runs.
Dreslinski went three-for-three with two RBI for Rochester. Belk, Burkhardt, Doherty, Flanagan and Keele all added two hits apiece.
Nichols went four-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored.
Isaac Behme (Webster) took the loss. Rochester tagged Behme for a dozen hits and nine earned runs.
After winning four straight earlier in the week, the Twins have dropped two in a row. Geneva (8-8) travels to Wellsville on Sunday for a 5 p.m. start. Justin Ratte (Flagler) gets the start for Geneva.
Rochester (5-9) travels to Olean (9-6) for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
