WEBSTER, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers took advantage of three AIA errors in the eighth inning to erase a 5-4 deficit en route to a 6-5 victory on Thursday evening. The Dodgers are now 9-5 on the season while AIA is now 3-9.
The Dodgers got on the board with three runs in the first inning. Heath Burton (Furman) tripled to lead off the game and scored on a single by Cody Stevenson (Webster), Matt Calhoun (Harding) tripled home Stevenson, and Luke Feisal (Wofford) singled home Calhoun.
AIA tied the game with a single run in the third and tied the game with two, two-out runs in the fourth.
The game remained tied until the seventh, when Stevenson drove home Burton again with a RBI single after Burton connected on his second triple of the game.
AIA answered right back with two of their own in the eighth inning. They collected three singles (two bunt singles) to load the bases and then plated runs on a hit by pitch and a walk to gain their first lead of the night.
Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) doubled to lead off the eighth for the Dodgers. After a walk to Tyler Stanford (Harding), Jake Kenney (Hagerstown CC) put down a perfect sac bunt to move the runners to second and third. After pinch runner Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) was caught in a pickle and tagged out an AIA throwing error allowed Stanford to come around to score to tie the game. The Dodgers scored the winning run the next batter when Kyle Danford’s (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) grounded was misplayed and allowed Dylan Drayton (NC Central) to score the eventual winning run.
Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh) struck out the side in the ninth to pick up the win. Eric Eck (Wofford) earned the victory for Hornell with 1.2 innings of work. Matt Danton (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) went 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.
Stevenson and Calhoun each finished two-for-four while Johnson and Burton were each two-for-five.
Trevor Keele was four-for-four with a RBI to pace AIA’s 12-hit attack. Zac Goodno, Cayden Cunniff, and Rob Groeschell were each two-for-four.
The Dodgers head back to Geneva on Friday for a rematch with the Twins. The Twins shutout the Dodgers 3-0 on Wednesday. Hornell is currently one game ahead of the Twins in the Western Division Standings.
