GENEVA, N.Y. — Two teams going in opposite directions met Tuesday night. The combatants left with compasses adjusted.
Nate Harris (University of Dayton) earned a pair of saves as the Geneva Twins swept the Wellsville Nitros 3-0/6-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park.
Harris tossed a pair of shutout innings for his second and third saves of the season. The right-hander from Honeoye Falls, New York has held opponents scoreless in his last six appearances, a span of six innings in which he has surrendered one hit.
Geneva rallied from four down in the night cap. The Twins took advantage of Wellsville generosity to score three in the six and take a lead they never relinquished. Michael Allen (Davenport) reached on an error, and Nick Kranick (Flagler) took advantage of a fielder’s choice. Taylor Nichols (South Alabama) loaded the bases with a hit. Max Townley (Ozarks) put the ball in play. Another error and two runs came home with Allen and Kranick crossing the dish. Townley eventually scored when Brandon Martinez reached on yet another error.
Wellsville also took advantage of shoddy fielding to post deuces in the first and fourth. Adam Hightower (Quincy) was safe on a fielder’s choice. Hightower moved to third on a hit by Montana Timmons (Wabash) and an error. Hightower came home when Michael Fries (Butler) advanced on an error. Pete Strommen (Eastern Illinois) made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to right scoring Timmons.
Wellsville added to the lead in the fourth. Hightower’s two-out bases loaded single delivered Whitcomb and Chandler Sidwell (Concordia).
Zach Connelly (Tampa) got the win going three and a third in relief striking out four, walking one while allowing three hits and one run. The right-hander is 1-1 in four appearances.
Henry Johnson (St. Leo) took the loss. He is 1-2.
Justin Ratte (Flager) tossed seven shutout innings for the win in the opener. Ratte has made three starts. He is 2-1 with an ERA of 1.50.
Geneva scored a run in the third and two in the fifth. Cody Walker (Chattahoochee Valley CC) singled with two outs to bring home Connor Lorenzo (SUNY Fredonia), and the Twins had all the offense they needed. They added insurance in the fifth. Lorenzo led with a single and move 90 feet on an error. Harrison Guiol (San Diego CC) drove home the run with a double. After a passed ball, Guiol scored on a base hit by Carter Bumgardner (Bucknell).
Doug Beath (Oakland) pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Anthony Galan (Brown) took the loss. Galan allowed eight hits and all three Geneva runs. The right-hander is 1-3 with an ERA of 2.10. Galan has gone at least six and two-thirds in each of his last three starts.
Bumgardner went four-for-eight with two RBI and a run scored.
Timmons had three hits in five trips to the plate in the night cap. He scored twice and had an RBI.
Geneva carried a four-game losing streak into the double-header. The Twins (6-6) host first-place Hornell (8-4) on Wednesday night. Anthony Dovale (Florida Southern) gets the start for Geneva. Jesse Frawley (Central Conn. St.) will go for Hornell.
Wellsville boasted a three-game winning streak before the day’s events. The Nitros (6-10) get a day off before Niagara (6-4) makes a trip to the Southern Tier on Thursday.
