SHERRILL, N.Y. — The Sherill Silversmiths put quality in front of quantity Sunday evening. Despite being outhit, the Silversmiths used the long ball to defeat the Geneva Red Wings, 11-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park.
Mitchell Iseneker (Mansfield) connected on his first home run of the season as the Smitties grabbed a lead in the third which they never surrendered. Anthony Ragos (Davis & Elkins) reached on a one-out single and scored on Iseneker’s bomb as Sherrill took a 2-1 lead.
The Smitties added a run in the fourth. Tyler Decker (Jefferson CC) doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. Ernest Ruch III (Mansfield) plated the run with a ground out.
Sherrill used the long ball to stretch their lead in the fifth. Taylor Hackett (Niagara) opened the stanza with a ground-rule double. One out later, Iseneker was hit by a pitch. Brad Kaczka (Monroe CC) cleared the bases with his first round-tripper of the campaign. Sherrill led 6-1.
Geneva used the long ball to rally for three in the sixth. Jesse Puschek (Canisius) opened the frame with a ground-rule double. One out later, Luke Stewart (Broward) hit his second home run of the season. Leon Stimpson (Alvernia) followed with a single. Ricky Moses II (Southern) walked, and Chris Ray (Alvernia) delivered with a base hit.
But the Smitties responded in the home half.
Ragos connected with a two-out double to plate Hackett and Mark Sherlock (Marywood). Sherrill led 8-4.
Ragos blasted Sherrill’s third home run of the game in the eighth plating Hackett. Ramos, a junior from Dumfries, Virginia, led all hitters going four-for-four with four RBI and two runs scored.
Nicholas Douglass (Southern Maine) tossed an inning and two-thirds of shutout ball for his second save of the season.
Oliver Pratt (Young Harris) allowed 11 hits but got his second win of the season.
Chris Murphy (Texas Christian U) took the loss. He is 1-1.
Decker, Hackett and Sherlock chipped in two hits apiece for the Smitties.
Puschek led Geneva going four-for-four.
Geneva falls to 5-3. The Red Wings take on the Syracuse Salt Cats (1-9), Monday on the campus at LeMoyne College. Jon Dunn (LeMoyne) gets the ball for the visitors. Joe Riley (St. Lawrence) takes the hill for the home nine.
Sherrill travels to Donovan Stadium Monday night to take on the Utica Brewers. Jesus Hernandez (Maryland East Shore) will look to make it two in a row for the Smitties. Miguel Navarro (Mt. San Jacinto JC) gets the ball for the Brewers.
