HORNELL — The Hornell Dodgers sent students from Hornell and Arkport home happy with a 6-1 victory over Rochester AIA in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park, Thursday afternoon. Five hundred and thirty-two students saw the Dodgers use solid pitching and timely hitting to earn the victory and improve to 6-2 on the season.
The Dodgers got on the board in the first when Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh) singled home Matt Calhoun (Harding). Luke Feisal (Wofford) stole home on a double steal with Johnson to give Hornell a 2-0 lead moments later.
AIA threatened to get on the board often, but their best threat was in the fourth. They loaded the bases, but Kyle Hathcock (NC Central) induced an inning-ending double play.
AIA did cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth on a Kolbe Andrade RBI single.
The Dodgers were able to answer back in the sixthh on a RBI single by Dylan Drayton (NC Central). They then put the game out of reach in the 6th when Tyler Stanford (Harding) hit a two-RBI single followed by a RBI single by Jake Kenney (Hagerstown CC).
The Dodgers finished the day with ten singles but also took advantage of five walks and four hit by pitches. Johnson finished the day 3-for-4 with an RBI, Stanford was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Cody Stevenson (Webster) was 2-for-3.
Hathcock allowed six hits and two walks in 4.2 innings of work in his first start of the season. Tyler Wilson (Monroe CC) pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit relief to earn the victory while Steven Dooley (Webster) and Eric Eck (Wofford) each tossed scoreless innings to close out the contest.
Zachary Gilcrease was 2-for-3 for AIA while Cayden Cunniff was 2-for-4.
The Dodgers leave the Southern Tier for the first time in 2012 this weekend when they head to Niagara Falls for a three-game series with the Power. The first game of the series is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday. Game 2 and 3 will be played Saturday starting at 4 p.m.
