GENEVA, NY — What’s the rule about how one is to treat a sleeping giant?
Just ask the Sherrill Silversmiths.
One night after giving the Geneva Red Wings their first blemish of the season, the Smitties found themselves on the wrong end of a thrashing.
Ricky Moses II (Southern) connected on a grand slam and sparked a six-run fifth as the Red Wings thrashed the Sherrill Silversmiths, 16-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Thursday night.
After five walks, a balk and a wild pitch Moses II did the damage and brought home Leon Stimpson (Alvernia), Joe Blair (Mid-Continent U) and Luke Stewart (Broward).
The inning was part of 16 straight runs scored by the denizens of “Big Mac.”
Moses II plated two more in the third as Geneva grabbed 3-2 edge. With a single the senior from Wynnewood, Pa. delivered Leon Stimpson and Luke Stewart.
Jon Leroux (Northeastern) singled and put runners on the corners. Phil Rosenblum (Villanova) came through with a sacrifice fly and Moses II scored.
The Red Wings scored three with two outs in the fourth. Moses II doubled home Leon Stimpson. Leroux followed with a two-run bomb, and the Red Wings led 12-2.
Geneva put the game out of reach with four more in the sixth. Stewart’s bases-loaded single scored Chris Ray (Alvernia). Leon Stimpson followed with another hit bringing his brother, Cameron (Monroe CC), and Brad Blumer (Cameron). Paul Cotler (Penn) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Stewart.
Sherrill jumped to a two-run in the lead in the second. Nate Eastman (Mohawk Valley CC) got the Smitties going with a two-out single. Tyler Decker (Jefferson CC) followed with a home run, and Sherril led 2-0.
The lead didn’t last long.
Geneva starter Jeff Croteau (Bentley) struck out four, walked three and allowed five runs over six innings.
Sherrill pitchers issued 16 walks.
Moses II finished with seven RBI on 3-of-4 hitting.
Leroux also added three hits to go with two RBI.
Leon Stimpson and Luke Stewart collected two his apeice.
Jon Dunn (LeMoyne) and Zachary Lander (SUNY Brockport) each struck out three in one inning of work for the Red Wings.
Decker had two hits for Sherrill.
Geneva hosts Adirondack on Friday. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
Sherrill gets a day off before traveling to Utica.
