The Hornell Dodgers trailed 6-0 in the first inning but the team chipped away and sent 290 students from Alfred Almond, Canaseraga, and St. Ann’s home happy when Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) connected on a walk-off double to give the lue & White a 7-6 victory over the Rochester AIA.
AIA batted around in the first inning and received a three-run homer from Matt Brynildson to cap a six run first inning. From then on the Dodger pitching kept AIA off the board and gave the offense time to get back in the game.
The Dodgers got a single run in the second on a bases loaded walk to Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC). They made it 6-2 in the third on a RBI groundout by Kevin Johnson (U of Pittsburgh).
Hornell cut it to 6-4 in the fifth when Chris Roeder’s (St. John Fisher) earned a RBI on a grounder and Dunn hit a sac fly.
The game remained 6-4 in the eighth when the Dodgers put runners on the corner with two outs. After AIA intentionally walked Matt Calhoun (Harding), Luke Feisal (Wofford) delivered his fourth hit of the game that plated two and tied the game up.
After AIA went 1-2-3 in the ninth, Alfred Almond High School grad Jake Kenney (Hagerstown CC singled with one out and came around to score the winning run when Benenson drilled a line shot over the right fielders head.
The Dodgers were kept in the game due to a solid bullpen performance by Jesse Frawley (Central Connecticut). He tossed 6.1 innings of three hit ball allowing just one walk while striking out four. Johnson relieved Frawley in the 7th allowed one hit in 2.1 innings and picked up the victory.
Feisal finished the day 4-for-5 with two RBI while Calhoun was 3-for-4. Benenson was 2 for 2 with the game winning RBI and Dunn finished 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
The Dodgers and AIA meet again tomorrow morning for another 11 a.m. start as students from Hornell and Arkport visit Maple City Park.
