HORNELL — The Olean Oilers tied the game in the 8th and scored three in 9th to rally for a 8-5 victory over the Hornell Dodgers on Saturday evening. The Oilers jump into first place in the West with a 4-2 record while the Dodgers are now 3-2.
The Oilers got on the board in the 1st inning but the Dodgers answered right back with three of their own. Heath Burton (Furman) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch, Cody Stevenson (Webster) doubled and scored on a RBI groundout by Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi), and Matt Calhoun (Harding) capped the first inning scoring with a solo homer over the centerfield fence.
The Dodgers took advantage of an Oiler error in the 3rd to make it 4-1 but the Oilers scratched back with a run in the 4th and two in the 5th to tie it up.
Hornell took the back the lead on a pure hustle play. Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) scored from second on a groundout by Jake Kenney (Hagerstown CC) to short.
The Oilers tied it up in the 8th on a RBI groundout by Mike Scarello and they took the lead for good in the 9th on a RBI single by Jose Alicea. They added two more runs and earned the victory.
Burton and Stevenson were each 2 for 4 for the Dodgers while Calhoun’s homer was his 3rd in three days.
Joe Pantano was 4 for 5 for the Oilers while Adam Urschel was 3 for 5 with a RBI.
The Dogers pitching staff combined to strikeout 16 batters in the game. Jake Brandenberger (Flagler) had nine, Tyler Wilson (Monroe CC) one, Will Birge (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) three, and Eric Eck (Wofford) three.
The Dodgers have Sunday off but will be busy hosting Fan Fest. Activities for all ages begin at 4 p.m. and run to 8 p.m.
Hornell returns to action on Monday when they host Niagara at 7 p.m.
Olean hosts Wellsville on Sunday. Start time is 3 p.m. on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.
