BATAVIA, N.Y. — Jon Klein (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) tossed a complete game shutout as the Monroe Community Tribunes split a pair on the road taking the opener 1-0 before falling in the nightcap 2-1 to the Genesee Community Cougars.
Klein surrendered just three base hits for his third win of the season.
Monroe scored the winning run in the top of the seventh.
Frank Poerio (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) led the frame with a base hit. Cam Stimpson (Philadelphia, PA(Friends) pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Dixon (East Amherst, NY/St. Joseph’s). Bobby Frantz (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) followed one out later with an RBI single for the game-winner.
Klein struck out five, walked none and hit one batter. The right-hander is 3-1.
Poerio went 2-3 in the game. Frantz also had a pair of hits in three trips with a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.
Dixon added a hit and two sacrifice bunts.
Pat Moore (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) went 1-3.
The Tribune infield turned a double play while Dixon threw out one runner from behind the plate.
In the second game, the Cougars got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the first to salvage the split.
Brandon Collins (Toronto, ONT.) plated Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and Tyler Koronas (Naples, FL.) with a single as the Cougars grabbed a lead they never surrendered.
Monroe threatened in the next stanza.
Ralph Alloco (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) led with a home run to cut the lead in half. Brad Kaczka (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) worked a base on balls. Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/Penfield) singled to put two on without an out, but the Tribs failed to take advantage as the inning ended with the first of two double plays turned by the Cougar infield.
After allowing three hits to start the game Nate Harris (Pittsford, NY/McQuaid) settled down and retired nine of the next ten batters he faced. He worked out of a jam in the sixth inducing a weak ground ball to the right side of the infield.
Frantz went 3-6 on the afternoon with two base swipes.
Kaczka had two hits and a walk.
Alloco added a walk with the home run.
The Tribunes are 9-15 and will host the Ontario Terriers Saturday afternoon at 1p.m.
Mercyhurst NE comes to East Henrietta Road for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is also scheduled for 1 p.m.
