[3] Baylor (30-7) vs. [1] Kentucky (35-2)

This is the seventh meeting between Kentucky and Baylor, with the Wildcats leading, 6-0. The two schools haven’t met since the 1980 season. Seven days later during the 1948 Olympic Basketball Trials in New York City, Kentucky won 77-59. Kentucky is 57-9 all-time against schools comprising the Big 12 conference. That includes a 75-65 win over Kansas earlier this season as well as an 87-71 win over Iowa State in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats’ most common opponent from the Big 12 has been Kansas (20-6).

So much for Baylor’s success with BOB plays.

  2. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Kentucky has 6 assists on 7 baskets. Baylor is 4 of 4.

  3. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 3:44 pm

I had to start with the second half of the Kentucky game. First impression: Baylor looks like they are playing in the championship game of a 4 day summer camp. Fatigued, slow, uninterested.

  4. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 3:52 pm

Hahaha. That is a great way to put it. I’m looking at this game as if I was Lou-vul and am preparing to beat Kentucky. At some point, do we sit back and appreciate Kentucky? Or is that weakness on my part?

  5. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Yes, if I could I would reenact the bathroom scene from Liar Liar for that last sentence because I should kick my a@@.

  6. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 4:04 pm

From Twitter: “Quincy Acy had 20 points on 7-10 shooting. The rest of Baylor has 19 points on 6-28 shooting.”

  7. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Brady Heslip had nine threes against Colorado. He hit one against Xavier and has one point today.

  8. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 4:49 pm

No surprises in this tournament. Get to watch every game and be prepared from one game to the next. Doesn’t surprise me.

  9. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 4:50 pm

    Now comes the interesting game…

  10. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:12 pm

There are two fouls that need to be addressed in the rule book: 1) incidental contact and 2) any contact on a 50/50 ball. I don’t know the solution, but that foul on #5 for Kansas on the rebound on White was bad. Maybe there are already rules for these. Let me know.

  11. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:51 pm

That foul on the 50/50 ball has always been a head-scratcher for me. How do you decide who has the ball or right to the ball?

  12. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Either Kansas is not as good as as advertised, or the Heels have done a remarkable adjusting to the loss of Marshall? Or Marshall is just a replaceable piece to the puzzle?

  13. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:55 pm

UNC has 15 assists on 21 field goals.

  14. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:58 pm

I think Stillman White is just playing well. Look – I like Marshall and think he is a great college PG. But take him off of UNC. Is he that good? I’ve heard Carolina fans say they hope he doesn’t go to the draft this year. Is that really how good he is? I don’t see it. I just think White is putting the ball on the money this game.

Frantic pace. Will either coach try to slow it down?

  15. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 5:58 pm

    UNC has missed 12 shots?

  16. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:01 pm

True about Marshall. Take him out of the up and down style of UNC, and he doesn’t get his numbers.

  17. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Not that this is important to today’s game, but can either of these teams hang with Kentucky playing at this pace?

  18. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Kansas averages 5.7 blocks per game. They have zero right now. Of course, UNC averages 5.8, and they only have one.

  19. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:12 pm

I think Carolina can. Kansas is just playing unconscious right now. They can’t do this consistently, can they?

  20. Smitty says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:13 pm

I am impressed that both teams scored 47 points and there is a combined 7 turnovers in the first half. That is impressive.

  21. Smitty says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:14 pm

Sorry.. 9 turnovers. My math stinks.

  22. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:26 pm

    So is Henson done?

  23. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Never mind. He is back in now.

  24. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Kansas is just too physical on defensive end. They are not the better basketball team skill wise, but right now they are imposing their will on Carolina.

  25. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:42 pm

On the other hand, Carolina’s basketball savvy is keeping them close.

  26. Smitty says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:45 pm

Doe anyone else get the feeling that this pace is starting to tire UNC??

  27. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:45 pm

Does Carolina know how to switch sides of the floor?

  28. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:47 pm

After missing just 12 shots in the 1st 20, Carolina has already missed 14 in the second half.

  29. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Self with the crafty Triangle and two call. How long does he stick with that?

  30. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:52 pm

It looks like it is tiring them. Honestly, Carolina is not used to this pace. They put up points, but they really are an inside-out team and shoot a lot of threes. They are not the Lawson or Felton styles of Carolina teams.

  31. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 6:59 pm

Barnes took that to the basket way too early in the shot clock. Isn’t it obvious they have to move the ball a little before attacking the rim.

  32. Smitty says

    March 25, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Barnes plays like he has no idea there is a shot clock.

  33. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Oh Stillman – “man’s got to know his limitations.”

  34. Smitty says

    March 25, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Tar Heels have only scored 20 points in the second half and are still shooting 45% for the game.

  35. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 7:07 pm

    Make that 43%.

  36. Rey says

    March 25, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Good point on White, Casey. But, huge credit to him. He played well for a walk-on freshman thrown into the fire. He was a GREAT high school player here in NC that could have taken scholarships at a lot of other schools.

Kansas plays like bullies. I don’t mean they play dirty, but they just come out and want to make the game so physical; they just grind on you all game. I thought that would give Carolina, who is more finesse, some problems. It will be fun to watch how they guard Sullinger. They may need some oxygen on Ohio State’s bench next weekend for him.

  37. Casey says

    March 25, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Now that I think about some more, White had to take that three. In fact that might have been a play designed for him to shoot. The Kansas defense was falling way off him. UNC offense was clogged. He really was the only getting open looks.
