JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The University of Dayton women’s basketball team won the Saint Peter’s College Holiday Classic Friday with a 60-50 victory over Binghamton in the championship game.
The Flyers improve to 8-4 overall to wrap up the non-conference portion of their season. Binghamton drops to 7-7 overall.
Sophomore Cassie Sant scored a career-high 16 points to pace the Flyers and was named to the all-tournament team. Junior Sam MacKay also notched career highs in points (14) and three-point field goals made (4).
Senior Justine Raterman had a game-high 12 rebounds (including five in the first five minutes) to go along with 10 points for her second double-double of the season. She scored 26 points in Dayton’s win over South Florida the day befpre and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
The Flyers shot just 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field and had their third lowest offensive output of the season in the first half and were down 24-21.
With 4:14 to play in the game, the Flyers were down 46-43 to the Bearcats. Senior Patrice Lalor had a steal and called a timeout that sparked a 10-0 Flyer run which included a jumper by Sant, a pair of Elle Queen free throws and two MacKay treys to put UD up 53-46 with 54 seconds left in the game
MacKay, Andrea Hoover and Kalya Moses each went 2-for-2 at the free throw line in the final 48 seconds to help preserve the win for Dayton.
The Flyers open Atlantic 10 play at UD Arena on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 against Rhode Island at 2 p.m. ET. Dayton is on the road at Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday, Jan. 10 before coming back to UD Arena on Sunday, Jan. 15 for their ESPN2 game against Temple at 2 p.m. ET.
