So many good college basketball games and so little time. Is anyone missing the NBA? Here is an idea – the NBA can start in April and play through July. Just leave us with college basketball
Looks like Pujols is taking 10 years and $250 million from the Angels. Good deal for the Angels or bad? Personally, I am wondering how that salary is going to look on the books in 3-4 years when Pujols starts to break down physically. He very well may end up being a DH from years 6-10, but there is no doubt that he is the bat that the Angels need in their lineup.
It’s crazy that to entice a guy like Pujols you have to sign him to a contract where his production early on will probably far out-weigh what he does in the last couple of seasons.
Speaking of college basketball, a friend of mine just posted on Facebook that he’s looking for someone to go with him to the #9 UConn vs. #25 Harvard game. Harvard is #25 in college basketball!!! Holy Cow! I might have to check out a game at some point this year.
Long-term contracts in baseball are a funny thing. It’s like it’s become an accepted thing that you hope to get all your value out of the deal in the first half because you won’t be getting your money’s worth in the end. It’s a weird thing.
That’s why it made so much more sense for the Cardinals to give him big money than anyone else. At least they could rationalize that they already got more than their money’s worth for him while he was still under team control, and now they’re taking their chances on a deal that might not ending up being worth it because…well, he’s the second coming of Stan Musial.
I have to believe that this is dangerous ground that David Stern is walking on right now. Rejecting the Chris Paul trade? On what grounds? Rumor has it that some of the owners didn’t like the deal, but that is hardly a reason to have the deal nixed.
Wow – sports has been busy this week. Here’s how I weigh in for what it’s worth:
1) Luis Pujols – So I guess he just chased the money? Or is it that guys really want to play for Mike Soscia? It seems like the Angels have made some big signings the past decade. I bet he’s a heck of a salesman. Kind of like Roy Williams, only I’m sure he can coach a little baseball. But I also have to ask how much of him going to the AL, where he can DH, had to do with it? He’s what – 3-4 years away at most from being a DH permanently, if that?
2) Chris Paul trade – So I guess CP3 wants out of NO? Hm, I had no idea. I actually think the Hornets MIGHT become better with that trade. Kevin Martin, Scola (so underrated), Odom (will play with a chip on his shoulder), and the Slovenian who will bring 20 exciting points every 6-7 games. No Gasol on the Lakers? Come on. His value is unreal to that team, unless they are making space for a Howard offer. At first I thought CP3 with Bryant wouldn’t work, but ‘ol Kobe is breaking down. He will get how many open jumpshots with Paul in the lineup. Kobe’s ego has to like this trade. I could care less about the business side of this trade. I hate the NBA’s business practices.
3) Dwight Howard – So I guess he is finally realizing that he has no post game, so he’s asking for a trade to the Deron Williams Nets? Classy Dwight. Was the NBA ever like this before? I know guys have requested trades in the past, but did they ever actually name the team they want to go to? There is just something so classless about that. You want a trade because you’ll never win in Orlando? These guys are ruining the NBA for me.
4) Weis to Kansas. So I guess it’s looking that bad in Florida Gator country?
5) Brandon Roy has retired due to his recurring knee problems. Sad sad sad. He was going to be and already was a special player who was going to control the West at some point.
You have to wonder if all the long hours at the negotiation table are having an effect on Stern. Like Rey said, the Hornets’ lineup after that trade looked pretty good.
On the topic of NBA players asking for trades in the past. I know Kareem (who was Lew at the time) forced the Bucks to trade him after Oscar Robertson retired, and Bobby Dandridge was traded.
Moses Malone might have requested a trade from the Rockets to the 76ers.
Other than that? I don’t recall anything like the current state.
It is sad if Brandon Roy retires. When did the Trail Blazers make their deal with the devil? That franchis has had a nasty run of bad luck.

So much for that.

Tommy Amaker is doing a solid job with the Crimson.
Crossword Pete says
Indeed Amaker is! Harvard ranked for the FIRST time in its basketball history!

Please Shane Battier, please.. Please say it isn’t so..

I will be alternating back and forth between the UConn/Harvard game tonight and the Flyers/Penguins game. I’m pretty excited to see both.
And I think the Angels just guaranteed themselves to be the favorite in the AL West for the next five years.
