JERSEY CITY, NJ – An 8-0 run that included a big three-pointer by Brandon Hall gave the Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (2-4, 1-0 MAAC) a 51-44 win over the Siena College Saints in their MAAC opener tonight. The Peacocks allowed a 16-point lead to get away in the second half, but the 8-0 run gave Saint Peter’s the lead back and the victory. Chris Prescott led all scorers with 16 points, including a big runner during the 8-0 run to put the Peacocks up by three.
Saint Peter’s exploded out of the gate, winning the tip and scoring the first nine points, seven by Karee Ferguson. Siena then hit a free throw to make it 9-1, but six straight by Prescott made the score 15-1 with 14:48 to play. Siena then hit a triple to make it 15-4, but Saint Peter’s quickly extended their advantage back to 14 at 21-7 with 10:01 to play in the first half.
Saint Peter’s then led 25-12 at the 4:29 mark, but a 6-0 Siena run drew them to within seven at 25-18. Siena had the ball looking to cut the lead to five, but a Hall steal and a Yvon Raymond put back with less than two seconds left on the clock gave the Peacocks a 27-18 halftime lead.
Prescott led the Peacocks with nine points, while Ferguson had seven points. OD Anosike and Rob Poole led the Saints with five points each. Saint Peter’s shot 45.5% from the field and held Siena to 26.3%. The Saints held a 14-13 rebounding lead, but committed nine turnovers to the Peacocks seven.
Siena came out and cut the deficit to seven points at 29-22, but an 11-2 run by Saint Peter’s gave the Peacocks their largest lead at 16 points, 40-24 at the 14:34 mark. Siena then went on a 16-0 run that took 8:46 off the clock to tie the game at 40-40.
Saint Peter’s ended the 9:50 drought and re took the lead on a free throw by Raymond, which sparked the 8-0 run. After a stop, Prescott hit a runner in the lane, Raymond made two more from the line and Hall hit the big three for a 48-40 lead. Raymond made three more from the line in the final minute to ice the game.
Prescott was 6-13 from the field and had two rebounds and two assists. Raymond finished with 15 points, including 7-10 from the line and nine rebounds. Darius Conley added 10 points and six rebounds. Anosike finished with 12 points and 10 boards for Siena, while Rob Poole scored 11 points. Saint Peter’s shot nearly 42% from the field and held Siena 34.1%. Siena outrebounded Saint Peter’s 34-17, but committed 14 turnovers to the Peacocks 11.
Tonight was the third straight season the Peacocks have won their MAAC opener and the third straight win over Siena. The last time Saint Peter’s won three straight over Siena was during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
The Peacocks will play their second MAAC game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Riverdale, NY to face the Manhattan College Jaspers for a 2pm tip-off.
