ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Jean Yves Toupane has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team for the 2012-13 season, head coach Mark Schmidt announced on Wednesday.
Jean Toupane (Jawn two-PAIN), a 6-foot-7, 185-pound small forward from Lee Academy in Maine, is rated as an 85 overall and is regarded as one of the top 100 prospects in the nation at his position by ESPN Recruiting.
“Jean is a long, athletic player with great skills,” said Schmidt on the newest member of the program. “He can really score the ball from the wing and we’re excited to have him join us.”
Toupane was a teammate of fellow Senegal native and current Bona freshman Youssou Ndoye at Lee. The pair were both a part of the Sports for Education and Economic Development (SEEDS) program in Senegal that helped guide them to the United States.
Toupane was named MVP of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program in Africa before making his stateside debut at the 2010 Jordan Brand international game, where he also earned MVP honors. The swingman has been listed as one of the top five recruits in Maine and one of the top 25 players in the New England Region.
