Trippin’: La Salle grows up in Canada
La Salle went into its game against the Carleton Alumni team slightly confused. After all, this was supposed to be a team filled with European pros and former stars.
Then the Explorers actually saw their opponent.
“They actually threw us off a little bit,” head coach Dr. John Giannini said. “There were pros in their 30s, and they had put on a few pounds. So the players looked at them, and thought it would be easier.”
La Salle shouldn’t have underestimated the Alumni team, though. Two-time national player of the year Osvaldo Jeanty scored 34 points as Carleton Alumni knocked off the Explorers, 80-77.
Giannini didn’t seem too upset about the loss, especially since La Salle bounced back and beat seven-time national champion Carleton to finish 2-1 on the trip.
“Some people think you don’t learn as much when you lose,” he said. “But losses stick with kids a little bit.”

UD improves to 3-0 on European trip
Big plays down the stretch lifted the University of Dayton men’s basketball team to an 82-75 victory over St. Jan-Antwerp Saturday in Antwerp, Belgium. The Flyers improved to 3-0 on their European exhibition trip.
Dayton trailed at halftime 43-34 but climbed back on top after intermission. St. Jan, one of the most successful teams in Belgium’s pro leagues, answered to regain the lead with two minutes to go in the third quarter. But UD brushed aside that comeback to lead by four heading into the final quarter and pushed its advantage out to as much as 13 before settling back to the final seven-point margin.

The Netherlands day three…after a long night’s sleep, I woke to the phone ringing and it was Bill Comar telling me that it was time for breakfast. The usual mini-pancakes and polish sausage never tasted so good.

We arrived in Amsterdam around 11:45 pm, which would have been 5:45 AM our time back in Ohio. We then hopped on a bus and immediately stopped off to see a small town / village to see the windmills.
Freshman UD basketball player Gavrilovic to feel at home
That his teammates will look to him to be everything from translator and taste-tester to their tour guide for much of the next 10 days only seems natural.
The University of Dayton basketball team leaves today on a European trip that includes stops — and games — in the Netherlands, Belgium and especially France, the home of Flyers new big man, Alex Gavrilovic.

Spiders receive hoops commitment
The University of Richmond’s basketball program began replacing the four seniors on this coming season’s team by receiving an oral commitment Thursday night from Terry Allen, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Manvel, Texas.
As would be expected with a big man who will be joining the Spiders’ variation of the Princeton offense, Allen is versatile.
“Terry can play the wing, the post and guard. He’ll do a little bit of everything if he has to,” said Greg Devers, Manvel High’s coach. “For a man his size, he’s got some great ball-handling skills.”

Bona continues competitive climb
Sean McNamee offers a unique perspective when discussing the dynamics of St. Bonaventure University through the years.
His father started the school’s swimming and diving program in the 1940s, McNamee graduated from the school in 1986 and replaced his brother as the swimming and diving head coach in 1992, so he’s witnessed the university run through different cycles.
“I’ve seen it when it was really good, somewhat trying and really trying,” said McNamee, who was named coach around the time the university was on the verge of bankruptcy. “Where we are right now is an extremely exciting time in my mind.”
Mark Schmidt has navigated the men’s basketball program through the murky repercussions of NCAA probation and last year the team earned its first postseason berth since 2001-02. In women’s basketball, Jim Crowley recently agreed to a contract extension after leading the Bonnies to berths in the Women’s NIT in each of the last three seasons. Last year’s men’s soccer team finished tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10, the program’s best since 2000, and McNamee traditionally has one of the top two teams in the league.
de Haas to leave SBU, pursue professional career
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Head men’s basketball coach Mark Schmidt announced Tuesday that guard Sam de Haas will not return to St. Bonaventure for the upcoming season. Schmidt said de Haas informed him that he intends to sign a professional contract with the WCAA Giants Bergen op Zoom in his native Netherlands.
NCAA approves beefed up academic regs – postseason play at stake for low APR scores
The NCAA is one of the most vilified organizations in America. Like the United States government, the NCAA is largely composed of a vast, opaque bureaucracy with arcane, mountainous regulations that spends terrific amounts of money and often produces only ephemeral results. Like the government, everyone complains about the NCAA. Hell, Jay Bilas’s entire Twitter feed is devoted to Bill Raftery drinking jokes and digs at NCAA hypocrisies.
Billikens have six practice days remaining until departing for Canada

In all, the Billikens practiced four days (eight sessions) last week, beginning Aug. 1. SLU is allowed 10 days of practice prior to departing for a five-game, 10-day trip to Canada on Aug. 19.
Bound by basketball
Jeremy Pressman, a Modern Orthodox Jew, wanted to take his basketball skill to a new level, see how he fared outside the world of Jewish private schools, so he spent his senior year at Pennsbury High School in Bucks County.
Where he rode the bench, 13th man on a 12-man team.
Because he observes the Sabbath, Jeremy couldn’t practice on Saturdays or play games on Friday nights. His coach told him, quite understandably, “How can I play you when others are practicing more and you aren’t even coming to half the games?”
But one pretty good thing came out of his one year of Pennsbury basketball. His friendship with Lavoy Allen.
