OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA – La Salle freshman Jerrell Wright scored 19 points in 21 minutes on a perfect 7-for-7 from the field but the Explorers had a late lead evaporate in an 80-77 loss to a veteran Carleton Alumni team on Monday night. Sophomore Sam Mills added 14 points and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds for the Explorers, while classmate Tyreek Duren scored 10.
“Tonight was a hard-fought game that will make us better,” head coach Dr. John Giannini said. “Osvaldo Jeanty is a former two-time National Player of the Year and a veteran professional who was just tremendous against us.”
Jeanty shot 11-for-17 from the field on his way to 34 points. Stu Turnbull had 14 points for Carleton.
“We had a seven-point lead with five minutes left that we didn’t hold on to,” Giannini said. “We made costly errors at that time that we can learn from. There’s no question that this trip is benefiting us.”
Wright did not miss from the floor and was 5-for-7 from the foul line. He added four rebounds.
“Individually it was good to see Jerrell play well in his second outing against highly experienced players,” Giannini said.
La Salle, which defeated Ottawa, 75-61 on Sunday evening, missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
The Canadian trip concludes on Tuesday night with a match-up against seven-time National Champion, Carleton at 7 PM.
