GW adds Pete Strickland and Kevin Sutton as assistant coaches
WASHINGTON, DC — Pete Strickland and Kevin Sutton have been hired as assistant coaches for men’s basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Mike Lonergan announced today. Strickland and Sutton join Associate Head Coach Hajj Turner to round out Lonergan’s staff. Strickland comes to GW after spending the last five seasons as an assistant coach at NC State under Sidney Lowe. Sutton spent the last eight seasons at Florida’s Montverde Academy where he coached former Colonial Joseph Katuka (`11) among others.
“Pete and Kevin are both well-respected basketball coaching veterans,” Lonergan said. “It is a luxury to have someone of Pete’s stature and experience on our staff, and I plan to lean on him for his insight and wisdom. Kevin is also someone I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. He has built a solid reputation as one of the best teachers of the game.”
Strickland has 21 years of Division I coaching experience overall, including serving for seven years as a head coach at Coastal Carolina from 1999-05. He earned Big South Coach of the Year honors in 1999-00 and left CCU with the second-most career victories in school history. While at Coastal Carolina, Strickland helped produce three All-Americans. One of Strickland’s players was the Big South Player of the Year three times in his last five years at Coastal, while three players made the All-Rookie Team, and two were named Rookie of the Year.

Former St. Joseph’s star a force in youth hoops
HAMPTON, Va. – It’s 12:05 p.m. on a sunny Friday, and Marcellus “Boo” Williams Jr. is sequestered in his State Farm agency office on Coliseum Drive.
Across the parking lot, a lunchtime crowd forms at Hooters Restaurant. But as on most days, the laid-back 51-year-old, who also runs the renowned Nike-sponsored, nonprofit Boo Williams Summer League Amateur Athletic Union program, doesn’t have time for lunch.
PITTSBURGH — Duquesne coach Ron Everhart withdrew his name from consideration for the same job at Penn State on Thursday.
Everhart, 49, who has led the Dukes to four consecutive winning regular seasons and three straight postseason appearances, interviewed with Penn State athletic director Tim Curley on Tuesday at an undisclosed location. He was in the mix along with Milwaukee’s Rob Jeter and Boston University’s Pat Chambers for the position left vacated by Ed DeChellis, who took the same job at Navy last week.
SARASOTA, Fla. — On stage, Dick Vitale is most of the things you’d expect Dick Vitale to be. Excited? He’s yelling so loud his voice cracks. Demonstrative? His hands fire out in opposite directions every time he jams more emphasis on a syllable.
But Vitale isn’t smiling. He isn’t talking about Diaper Dandies or Primetime players. He’s choking back tears.
Behind him stand three couples. Three sets of parents who buried their children in the past six months because of a disease Vitale swore to his friend he would help fight.
Adams, a 54-year-old government worker, has had connections to all of it for years, as the father of a former IU basketball staff member, as a basketball coach for two decades, and as the current coach of the top team in that AAU program, Indiana Elite. Since 2003, he’s even used his Bloomington-based nonprofit, African Hoop Opportunities Providing an Education (A-HOPE) foundation to try to help fulfill the hoop dreams of young international players.
