Cincinnati-UConn thread

March 19, 2011 by Paul Gotham 7 Comments

It’s tournament time in the city. Ring-a-ling. Hear them ring. Soon it will be the Final Four…

A trip to the Sweet Sixteen is on the line when the Big East foes clash.

Matchup

Gates moving up list

  • Cincinnati is making its first NCAA Championship appearance since 2005, and won its opening game of the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive time (2004, 2005, 2011).
  • The win over Missouri came six years to the day since the Bearcats’ last tournament win, a 76-64 victory against Iowa on March 17, 2005.
  • Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin won his first NCAA tournament game in three tries (1-2). Cronin lost firstround games in 2004 and 2006 as the head coach at Murray State.
  • UC is 14-0 against non-BIG EAST teams this season.
  • UC’s 26th win marks the most for the program since the 2001-02 season, in which the Bearcats finished 31-4.
  • Cincinnati improved to 25-0 this season when leading at halftime. The Bearcats led 39-28 at halftime.
  • Cincinnati junior Yancy Gates recorded an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, his seventh double-double of the season and 14th of his career. Gates made both of his three-point attempts, a new career high, after making just three career three-pointers his previous 99 games.
  • UConn has a record of 45-27 in 30 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Huskies have won two NCAA National Championships, in 2004 and 1999, and the Huskies also advanced to their third NCAA Final Four in 2009. UConn has reached the NCAA Elite Eight nine times and the Sweet Sixteen 15 times in school history. UConn is 41-13 in the NCAA Tournament in 17 appearances under Jim Calhoun and were 4-14 in 13 appearances in the tourney prior
    to Calhoun’s arrival in Storrs.

So on Saturday evening, I turn on ESPN for a respite between commercials during the NCAA’s and there I find the Notre Dame women playing their first round NCAA tourney game vs Utah. ND is a 2 seed and Utah a 15 seed. So WHERE is the game being played??? On Utah’s HOME COURT in Salt Lake City!!!!!! How in the world does a 2 seed have to face a 15 seed on the 15 seed’s home court?!?!?! How could the NCAA let that happen???? Sheeeeeeesh.
