A10 Semi-final Ticker – Richmond vs. Temple

The 35th annual Atlantic 10 tournament continues with a semi-final matchup between Richmond and Temple. Reporting live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ,  Pickin’ Splinters is court side bringing you scores, stats, analysis, and insights. We might even get a quote or two from players or coaches.

#3 Richmond (13-3/24-7)  vs. #2 Temple (14-2/24-6)

During the regular season Temple won in their only meeting this year, winning 73-53 on February 17th.

Stick around everyone. We are about the find out who is the other half of the Championship game equation. About 10 minutes until tip-off .

A great rendition of Michael Jackson’s BAD, the Richmond Spiders take the floor.  Temple follows and we are just 2 minutes away from tip-off.

Lineups are being announced and fans are letting everyone know their allegiance. A noticeably pro-Temple crowd. Go figure, right?

And we are off with the Spiders controlling the ball.

Justin Harper with the put back and the Spiders are off to a quick 2-0 lead.

Temple responds with a bucket by Ramone Moore and the score is tied at 2-2.

Owls’ Ramone Moore fouls Darien Brothers on the 3 pt attempt. Brothers hits 2 out of 3, and the Spiders lead 4-3.

Lavoy Allen with the bucket and one!! Hits the free throw and Temple now leads, 6-4.

Referees are calling this close the vest as we just had our 3rd touch foul called and we are only 4 minutes in. This one is on Aaron Brown.

Media timeout. Temple leads 6-4.

Justin Harper hits both free throws and the score is 6-6.

But Temple responds and it is Wyatt from downtown!! 9-6

Another 3 by Temple, this time it is Aaron Brown! 12-6

Richmond responds and it is Kevin Anderson, 12-8

Another 3 by Temple, 15-8!!

Kevin Anderson is fouled going to the basket and will shoot 2.

Hits the first.

Misses the second. 15-9

Media timeout.

Another 3 from Temple, this time from Wyatt.

Justin Harper responds with a 3 for the Spiders, 18-12.

Note: Kevin Anderson of Richmond picked up his 2nd foul with a little over 10 minutes to go in the first half. How critical is this game for the Spiders? Coach Mooney is leaving him in.

Teams are trading baskets. Media timeout with 7:30 in the first half. Temple leads 24-16.

Kevin Anderson hits one of two free throws and the Owls lead 24-18.

Cedrick Lindsay to the basket. Fouled on the acrobatic drive and one!!

Lindsay hits the free throw, 24-21 Owls.

Spider fans making their presence felt.

The drive by Anderson and the reverse layup. Spider fans are really making some noise!!

Wyatt answers and the lead is back to 3, 26-23.

Justin Harper comes right back and the lead is back to 1, 26-25.

Temple’s Juan Fernandez is forced into a bad shot and the ball is back to the Spiders.

Loose ball and Temple’s Aaron Brown goes crashing into the press. Just a few feet away from your Pickin Splinters’ reps.

Anderson with a drive and the lead is back to 1, 28-27.

Media Timeout and it is needed. I am whipped!! 🙂

Ramone Moore hits one of two free throws and the lead is back to 2, 29-27.

Lavoy Allen with the jumper and the lead is back to 4, 31-27.

A scramble under the basket and Kevin Smith is fouled. He misses both free throws.

Justin Harper with the 3 and the lead is back to 1. 31-30, Temple timeout.

Yes, I believe the Temple Band was playing Dr. Dre.

A missed shot at the buzzer by Temple and we are at halftime.  A well played first half by both teams. Temple leads 31-30.

Overall a well played first half by both teams.

Richmond was lead by Justin Harper with 12 points and 5 rebounds. The Spiders show 37% from the field, had 6 turnovers and 4 assists. They also had 10 offensive rebounds.

Temple was lead by Khalif Wyatt with 9 points.  The Owls shot 39%  from the field, had 7 assist and only 2 turnovers. Temple has foul trouble. Jefferson has 3 fouls and both Brown and Allen have 2.

Richmond is out rebounding Temple 23-15.

We are back and Temple will start the second half with the ball.

A missed 3 by Temple, Harper with the rebound and promptly hits the jumper at the other end.

Aaron Brown with the 3 for the Owls and Temple is back on top, 34-32.

Lavoy Allen with the basket and one! Allen hits the free throw, Temple leads 37-32.

Geriot responds for the Spiders with a 3, 37-35.

Aaron Brown with the drive and the bucket, 39-35.

Next possession, Cedrick Lindsay with the drive and one!! 39-37, media timeout with Lindsay on the line when we get back.

Lindsay misses the free throw and the ball is back to Temple.

Anderson with the drive and an incredible finish.

Temple misses on the other end and it is Justin Harper for 3!!!  Spiders lead 41-39 and Coach Dunphy wants to talk it over. Temple timeout.

Lavoy Allen with the bucket and we are tied at 41.

Juan Fernandez with the short jumper to put the Owls back up by 2.

Kevin Anderson responds for the Spiders and we are tied!

Khalif Wyatt for 3!! This off a hustle play by Fernandez to save the ball and kick it out to Wyatt.

Media timeout and Temple leads 46-43.

Foul on the other end, Cedrick Lindsay shoots 2 free throws.

Misses the first.

Makes the second and we have a 2 point game.

Geriot with the follow off his own miss and the game is tied at 46.

Missed 3 point attempt by Temple and Jefferson picks his 4th foul up on the scramble underneath. With 10 minutes left he has to come out of the game.

Missed shot at the other end by Harper and he picks up his third foul.

Kevin Anderson for 3!! The Spider fans go crazy and they now lead 49-46.

Temple timeout.

A traveling on Fernandez and Temple turns the ball over.

Kevin Anderson with another jumper, this for 2. Richmond leads 51-46.

Media Timeout.

Ramone Moore is fouled. Hits the first free throw, but misses the second.  51-47.

Justin Harper with the finish and one!! Harper misses the free throw, 53-47.

Temple misses on the other end and the ball goes back to Richmond.

Khalif Wyatt with the finish and one!!!

Wyatt hits the free throw and the Spider lead is down the 3, 53-50.

Turnover by Anderson and Wyatt scores the easy layup. 53-52.

Another turnover and Moore with the finish. The Owls are ahead 54-53.

Offensive charge by Cedrick Lindsay and the ball goes back to the Owls. The momentum has swung heavily in favor of the Owls.

The noise in Boardwalk Hall is deafening!

Temple misses the shot and a foul Ramone Moore.

Harper follows his own miss with a putback and Richmond is ahead 55-54.

After both teams have traded missed shots, Temple calls timeout with 1:33 left. Richmond leads 55-54.

Controversial no call as Wyatt draws contact and it isn’t called.  With 28.5 seconds left, Temple is forced to foul.

Media timeout and Richmond is holding on 55-54.

Fans from both teams are loud and Temple fans seemed determined not to let anyone hear anything Richmond fans have to say.

Kevin Anderson hits the first free throw.

Kevin Anderson hits the second free throw.

Temple timeout. Richmond leads 57-54.

Fernandez is fouled going to basket. He misses the front end of the one and one  – Richmond get the rebound.

Temple foul with 14.5 seconds left.

Cedrick Lindsay to shoot a one and one.

Lindsay hits the first.

Lindsay misses on the second.

Temple brings it down, Wyatt misses.

A rebound by Temple. Allen misses.

A the horn sounds and Richmond faithful go crazy.

Richmond wins and moves on to face Dayton!!

Richmond 58-54.

Some final stats from the game:

Richmond shot 38.9% for the game with 10 assists and 8 turnovers. Kevin Anderson led all scorers with 22 points and Justin Harper chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds.

Temple shot 35.1%  for the game with 14 assists and 6 turnovers. Khalif Wyatt led the Owls with 15 points  and Lavoy Allen had a double-double with 12 points/ 10 rebounds.

Richmond out rebounded Temple 42-36 for the game.

    Good for PSU, Chas. I was rooting for your guys. I’ll be a little ticked off if Mich State still gets in. Just doesn’t feel like 14 losses is “worthy”. (Guess I’m bitter about ND getting hosed a few years with 11 or 12 losses). 😉
