As we head into the weekend, it’s time to look at what Saturday’s CFB menu offers. But first, a pretty good game was played last night at Virgina Tech where the Hokies came from behind against Georgia Tech. GT tied it up with about 2:30 to go, but left too much time as the Hokies won it with a last minute TD by a score of 28-21. VT is the ACC front-runner and winner of 7 games in a row. And whenever they win, they make Boise State look just a little better each time.
Okay, onto Saturday:
#1 Oregon hosts Washington — This could get ugly quickly … unless the Ducks have a quackdown … er uh letdown after their big win at USC last week. Nah … the talent and quickness disparity is too big. Oregon by a bunch.
#2 Auburn hosts Chattanooga — Come again? Seriously?? So …. all you SEC lovers … take note of this cupcake scheduled right in the middle of the season. Geeeez, Cam Newton should schedule a hearing on Saturday with the NCAA to clear his name in this latest ALLEGED scandal. The Tigers won’t need him to smush the Chatty Kathys. Or are they the Noogies? Whatever.
#3 TCU at #5 Utah — Game of the Week! TCU is favored by 5 in this Mountain West showdown. Winner stays alive to bid for outside shot at national title game. Loser cries wee, wee, wee all the way home. The Utes register the minor upset in a close one … 24-21.
#4 Boise State hosts #26 Hawaii — This will probably be more interesting than it looks. The Broncos are 21 point faves, but I think they’ll be fortunate to win by that much. In the WAC, this has been a huge rivalry over the past 8 years or so and Hawaii brings some talent to the smurfturf this week. Of course, the Broncos have to win.
#6 Alabama visits #10 LSU — I think Bama takes this one 14-12. Les Miles and gang are too mentally challenged and too limited at the QB position to figure a way to win this one. I wish they would win it, but I don’t think so. I’m tired of hearing the “if a one-loss Alabama runs the table, they should play in the title game …. yada, yada, yada”. Shut up … ya got killed by SCarolina for crissakes!
#8 Oklahoma at Texas A&M — I’ll be there cheering on the Aggies. New QB Ryan Tannehill set records for A&M in his first start last week. But that was vs Texas Tech … this is the Sooners. So what … I’m going with the big upset … Aggies in a squeaker …. 28-27. Aggies Defense better show up!!!
Last but certainly not least … Notre Dame will NOT lose this week!!! That’s my prediction and I’m sticking to it.
Did I hear that the Michigan Skunkbears were given another year of probation??? What a shame!!! 🙂
Happy Weekend !!!
Casey says
Michigan? Probation? Pray tell.
Who is it that Notre Dame is going to beat?
So Hawaii makes 3 or nearly 3 WAC teams in the top 25. HOw many other conferences can boast of such numbers?
ALLEGED, Newton and Heisman – quite a combination. How will the voters respond?
Give Les Miles more credit. They win this weekend…not…psyche…
Wally says
Notre Dame will not lose Saturday!!! I guarantee it!!!
Remember the Skunkbears were being investigated for practicing too much? In excess of the rules when Richrod arrived.
If Les Miles were gonna have his scrap together for once, please let it be this week!
Wally says
Notre Dame plays Offweek Saturday and will not lose The Offweek Vacationers are winless … they always fail to show up. 😉
Here’s the Michigan story:

Nice edit catch … changing s**t to crap. You are like a goalie standing on his head.

I think this is a great article on an ND blog called “On Down the Line”. Maybe it’s because this guy and I tend to think a lot alike. Ok … so I think he’s smart. But for ND fans … you should give this a read. Some things should sound very familiar:

An interesting perspective, that article. I need more time to process, but I have often compared us to Nortwestern and sTANFORD LATELY, MORESO THAN SAY oHIO sTATE AND usc.

Pete —
What are your drinking? Can I have some? Those transitions in and out of CAPS and even different fonts seems like fun 🙂

Here’s a question related to the Cam Newton “situation”. Given 1) how mega-talented he is athletically and 2) that he arrived to Auburn via a junior college … how bad of a student must he have been in high school ??? (This is not to disparage JCs, but usually athletes go to JCs because they are short on athletic ability). This guy either has absolutely no business “being in college” from an academic standpoint … or somehow he escaped the eye of every major college recruiter in the land as a HS player … which is nearly impossible. So which is it?
Casey says
Newton went to JC because he was busted at Florida. He was on campus and got caught with a stolen lap top. Read here: https://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1176386/3/index.htm
Wally says
Ah … thanks, Casey.
Casey says
Whatever I can do for the team. Just let me know. 🙂
Casey says
As the article states, Northwestern guys play for respect.
ND guys? They played in high school for a spot in a prestigious program.
What do you play for after you got what you played for?
Crossword Pete says
Wally, sorry to be so long in responding. All transitions are typos that I just don’t bother to correct. All accomplished with the invaluable aid of water as my quaff!
Crossword Pete says
Stimulated by the Cam Newton discussion is an obscure – to me at least – fact. Randy Moss went to FSU after ND rejected him, but couldn’t fit in there due to legal issues (I believe) and went then to Marshall. ND actually recommended he look into FSU because of Wally’s friend Bowden’s ability to handle troubled players. Since it was Marshall’s last year before going top level D1, he did not have to sit a year. Lou Holtz did call Moss “the best athlete I have ever seen”, lending credence to my earlier assessment. Imagine being “too bad boy” for FSU.
BTW, I have to stand corrected on an earlier assessment of Brian Kelly as a game coach. While I believe he maximizes the emotions of his players in a game, his allowing a play call like he did against Tulsa that leads to a comeback-ending interception gives me my first opportunity to be critical of him. That was as poor a call as I think possible; some might call it Les Milesish. What made a bad situation worse was listening to him defend it in the post-game interview. Then he sounded Charlie UnWiseish (misspelling noted – looking for pronounciation). I hope he does not travel the road-already-taken!
Casey says
The Horned Frogs made it look pretty easy on the first drive. Hot knife through butter works as a description.
Crossword Pete says
The really bad news from that game is how mad Utah is going to be next week vs ND! Ouch!
Casey says
It’s a blowout in Salt Lake City – 23-0 TCU.
Crossword Pete says
TCU in a blow out, Alabama loses. At least we won’t have to worry about Bama sneaking back in the national championship picture. However I do believe we may once again get Boise-TCU in a consi bowl. Wonder what happens when Alabama beats Auburn?
Casey says
Les is more!
Wally says
Pete —
Why would Utah be mad? I mean … when ND gets blown out, they usually come back the next week with … uh …. nothing. So why would we expect …
Oh … that’s what we’re talking about. 🙂 jk … see Northwestern article.
Ya know … it’s nice that LSU beat Bama so we don’t have to hear people saying “Bama deserves the right to defend its title with one loss”. BUT … now we’ll hear all week that LSU is a “great one loss team and should go to title game, should Auburn lose”. Shut up people!!!! We draw the line in front of LSU … because they don’t pass the eye test or the smell test … we already know they’re mediocre and should have 3 losses. Get over the SEC.
Wally says
The pecking order for the non-BCS qualifiers is clear … or it should be:
1) Boise State
2) TCU
3) Utah
Let’s reflect … shall we? Last season, TCU squished Utah and they did it again yesterday. Boise State soundly beat Utah in the bowl game to close last season. Boise State and TCU keep winning … Boise State entered season ahead of TCU and have won impressively each week. Nothing has changed.
Wally says
Sorry … meant to say Boise State soundly beat TCU in last year’s bowl game. BSU is better than TCU. Oh and recall from yesterday … the Broncos killed the #26 Hawaii team. No contest.
Wally says
Real fun game at A&M last night. Student body there is something else. And now that Mike Sherman has finally located the Aggies’ best QB, we may have a pretty decent team here. ALWAYS nice to see Boob Stoops lose … and of course his brother dropped on too. What a shame!
I’m sorry but Joe Paterno looks like he’s ready for “the home”.
Did you see RichRod jump up and down like a schoolgirl at a birthday party after the Michigan Skunkbears finally stopped Illinois on a two point conversion … thereby “winning” the game in triple OT and “holding the feared Illini to 65 points” ???
