Another week and we have another great performance by a Boston Red Sox opponent. Last week, the Bronx Bombers earned recognition. The nomination caused some confusion on the Pine.

This week, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers grabs the honors.

Verlander struck out eight and walked one in eight shutout innings as the boys from Motown downed the Sox 2-0. The Old Dominion product limited Boston to just four hits helping the Tigers avoid a four-game sweep at Fenway. To top it off, Verlander sent home a message in the eighth as he regularly clocked in at 99 mph. On his 122nd pitch of the game, Verlander hit the century mark.

Hands down, it’s Y.E. Yang, the PGA Championship winner from South Korea. Never saw anybody stare down Tiger like that and come from behind in the last round to catch and beat him. Yang made two incredible shots … a chip in for eagle on the 16th and then an incredible 3 wood hybrid from about 220 yards to within six feet of the cup on 18 to clinch a birdie and ultimately a three stroke victory. His story is remarkable … he’s 37 and a self-taught, late blooming pro who was only in qualifying school less than a year ago. The poise he displayed in the final round was fantastic. This was his second win on the tour this year, and I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of him.

Gotta second the Y.E. Yang nomination. It was great to watch and stunning to watch all at the same time.

I would also like to nominate Brett Farve for his perfomance. He really had me fooled – I thought for sure he was retired this time.
