Round One – Pickin’ Splinters National Chan’ship

December 16, 2008 by Paul Gotham 8 Comments

Here you go gents.  Make your picks.  As always substantiating your choices at length is encouraged.  Higher seeds earned home field advantage for the first round.  We go to neutral sites next weekend.

Game 1 – #16 Troy at #1 Florida

Game 2 – #15 Buffalo at #2 Oklahoma

Game 3 – #14 Virginia Tech at #3 U.S.C.

Game 4 – #13 East Carolina at #4 Texas

Game 5 – #12 Cincinnati at #5 Alabama

Game 6 – #11 Texas Chrisitan at #6 Texas Tech

Game 7 – #10 Utah at #7 Penn State

Game 8 – #9 Ohio State at #8 Boise State

N.B. Virginia Tech and East Carolina earned an equal number of votes.  A flip of the coin was used to decide their individual seeds. 🙂

    1. Florida over Troy easily
    2. Oklahoma trounces Buffalo — they see Turner Gill on the other sideline, think Nebraska, and become enraged
    3. USC over Va Tech 28-7. Va Tech lucky to get past midfield; score on another blocked punt.
    4. Texas beats ECU 42-10 after leading only 10-7 at halftime.
    5. Upset special!! — Cincinnati blocks a punt with 45 seconds left and returns it for a TD to win 17-16.
    6. Red Raiders are pissed about Graham Harrel being snubbed from the Heismann ceremony and take it out on TCU. TT wins 49-13.
    7. Penn St wins a squeaker 20-17. Long Big 10 layoff takes it’s toll
    8. Broncos whip the baffled Buckeyes 31-21. By the time Tressell figures out the BSU offense, it’s too late.

    Bama takes care of Cincy.
Texas Tech puts up 60+ on TCU (… see Wally’s comment…)
    Penn St. slides by Utah.
Boise St.’s luck runs out as they are handled by OSU.

1.Florida 42, Troy 17: These Trojans play them tougher than expected, but Gators still win handily.
    2. Oklahoma 55, Buffalo 20: Bulls end Oklahoma’s streak of 60+ point games, but Sooners are still too much for them.
    3. USC 27, Virginia Tech 9: Trojans’ defense too much for Hokie’s mediocre offense.
    4. Texas 41, East Carolina 13: Longhorns dominate in all phases.
    5. Alabama 24, Cincinnati 13: Tide’s defense prevails.
    6. Texas Tech 28, TCU 20: Horned Frogs just can’t hold down Tech’s offense, in what turns out to be the most competitive first-round game.
    7. Penn St 31, Utah 20: Lions’ defense hasn’t given up more than 24 pts this year, and the trend doesn’t stop here.
    8. Ohio St 27, Boise St 17: Broncos haven’t played anyone even remotely close to as good as the Buckeyes since Sept 20 at Oregon, and it shows in this “upset”.

Percy Harvin doesn’t suit up. It makes no difference; Florida destroys Troy. The words hot knife and butter are used repeatedly as analysts discuss the way Florida’s offense looks against Troy. Gators 47 Troy 3

Drew Willy looks impressive running the Bulls’ offense, but it is to no avail. Sooners 45 UB 17. Turner Gill is quoted as saying: “This tournament gives an identity to the mid-major conferences. Yeah these games are blowouts now, but the seeds of equality have been sown. Ten years from now we will reap the benefit as this will forever change the recruiting landscape.”

USC 52 Va Tech 6 – Hokie mothers around the country can be heard whimpering in fear as their boys take the field against the Trojans.

Texas 38 ECU 10 Colt McCoy adds to his already impressive highlight reel.

Alabama 24 Cincy 21 – The Crimson Tide looks surprisingly uninspired for much of the contest, but pulls it out with two late scores.

Texas Tech 63 TCU 49 – Gunslingers unite!!!!! It is a classic offensive display and Graham Harrell is in a zone all night.

Utah 17 Penn State 14 – The Nittany Lions look sluggish and the Utes play with a chip on their shoulder.

Boise St. 41 OSU 21 The Broncos are too much for the Buckeyes even without using the Statue of Liberty.

    1. Florida over Troy – Not going to say another word.
    2. Oklahoma trounces Buffalo – Fueled by anger/happiness that Coach Gill is staying, UB stays with Oklahoma – for a quarter. After that it is a rout and features a Bob Stoops special. With 30 seconds left in the game, he has Bradford throw a bomb. Then remembers that it means nothing in the PickinSplinters Playoff.
    3. USC over Va Tech – The East Coast finds out how nasty USC’s defense is, as VT never cross the 50 yard line.
    4. Texas beats ECU
    5. Alabama over Cincy
    6. TT over TCU – Agree with everyone. Over under on points scored total for this game is 150.
    7. Utah over a sluggish Penn State game. Paterno, under pain medication, calls the wrong play “The Yawn Play” – results in a turnover which leads to Utah TD and no looking back.
    8. How the Big Ten has fallen. Boise St. proves it is for real and whips Ohio State.

Utah over Penn State. Please. Paterno doesn’t even call the plays.
