The topic yesterday at a local establishment was who are top players in the history of Duke basketball. Casey tried to share some wisdom gathered over three decades of following the Blue Devils. His voice was drowned out by a pair of EYE-talians in either ear who would not let Casey mention more than one name without responding.
Here is Casey’s list in order:
1. Grant Hill
2. Johnny Dawkins
3. Christian Laettner
4. Bobby Hurley
5. Shane Battier
6. Jason Williams
7. Danny Ferry
8. Elton Brand
9. Mike Gminski
10. Jim Spanarkel
11. Carlos Boozer
12. Mike Dunleavy
13. Sheldon Williams
14. Mark Alarie
15. Chris Carrawell
16. Chris Duhon
17. Trajan Langdon
18. Steve Wojciechowski
19. Art Heyman *
20. Jeff Mullins *
21. Dick Groat *
22. JJ Reddick
23. Gene Banks
24. Demarcus Nelson
* Careers took place in the 50’s and 60’s. Casey is relying upon video footage and lore. If (and I really hope this happens) some seasoned Duke afficianados happen upon this post, they would probably make a strong case why those three should be listed in the top ten. Please keep in mind that Duke made the final four three times in the early 60’s with Mullins and Heyman leading the way. Groat is renowned as the greatest athlete in the history of Duke sports.
When compliling this list Casey kept in mind ALL aspects of the game. Many of these players were more than proficient when sent out on the floor at being able to defend more than their shadow.
This list is not meant as an indictment of Reddick’s career. Casey actually likes Reddick and appreciated his efforts at Duke – just trying to keep everything in perspective.

Easton is angry…he will respond hopefully tomorrow.
p.s. Danny Ferry never won a national championship…more to come later…
Casey says
Actually 16 of these guys listed have not played on national title teams. Duke has only won three. My comment on the phone was: Reddick only played in one final four game, and he never played on a team that won a game in the final four.
Instead of getting angry use the above list as an inspiration to spend some time learning about these GREAT players.
Reddick was a very good college player who was also one-dimensional.
When we had this discussion yesterday, you didn’t even know know who Mike Gminski and Jim Spanarkel were. Come on! These guys are legends of Duke hoops.

Okay, okay good list. I agree Reddick is in the lower level of players. He was a great offensive player – definitely in the upper half of the list, but defensively he had more holes than my 1983 Who farewll tour tour t-shirt. If I was Coach K and had to pick my top 5 players that I would want taking a last second shot I think Reddick would be in the discussion. If I had the lead and had to put out my Duke all-defensive team, Reddick would be on the bus.

JD,
Well said!
By the way – I have an addendum to the list:
22. Brian Davis
23. Jeff Capel
24. Reddick
25. Banks
26. Nelson

Love the list; completely agree with the list.
I think I would probably make a case for Thomas Hill and Antonio Lang to be on that list – especially if you are going to argue who won a national championship. I believe Thomas Hill was in 3 Final Fours, won two National Championships. He was a good offensively and was a lock down defender…
