Jason Bowman (Westchester) tossed six and a third of perfect ball and Chris Vargo’s (Richmond) two-out triple in the bottom of the second scored Nick Spears (Texas/Pan Am) and Brett Burch (Oral Roberts) as the Geneva Red Wings held on to beat the Webster Yankees 4-3.
Chris Parkinson (Rhode Island) had two singles, a run scored, and an RBI to pace Coach Dave Herbst’s Wings.
Kyle Bellamy (Miami/ Florida) picked up the save, retiring the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Webster did not go down without a fight.
With one out in the seventh Gary Helmick (Towson) was the first Yankee to reach base and the first of four consecutive hits. Nelson Santos (NC A&T) moved Helmick to third with a shot into right field. Joe McIntyre (NC A&T) followed with an RBI single. Ryan Sullivan (Rochester) kept the hit parade going as he plated Santos.
McIntyre scored on Marcus Nidiffer’s (Kentucky) sacrifice fly.
Josh Brown (Towson) gets the tough-luck loss. Despite the protests of Coach Mike Kelly, Vargo’s hit stood. The ball appeared to land in foul territory before skipping into right field. That play alone caused three of the four runs surrendered by Brown.
Chris Coleman (Niagara) came on with bases loaded in the fifth and induced a rare triple play. The first batter he faced, Spears, ripped a sinking line drive into center field that Mark Stuckless (Monroe) made a diving stab to catch. Stuckless quickly gathered himself and fired to Helmick covering second. Helmick alertly spun and tossed to Santos at third for the trifecta.
Coleman looked dag-nasty as he pitched three and a third striking out one, walking one, and allowing just two hits.
Webster falls to thirteen and sixteen with the loss. Geneva improves to fifteen and fourteen.
The Yanks host Brockport on Saturday for a 1pm game at Webster-Thomas High School.
