To call Josh Brown’s (Towson University) 2007 NYCBL season inconsistent would be an understatement. The Annapolis, Maryland native pitched to three batters in the season’s second game. He struck out the side in order. Against Bolivar on June 20th he allowed no runs while striking out two in two innings of work. Beyond those relief appearances Brown has struggled, and the right-hander entered tonight’s game against the Elmira Pioneers with a 7.71 ERA. For now the struggles seem to be behind him.
Brown proved to be the elixir that Coach Mike Kelly’s Webster Yankees needed. He started and went five and two-thirds as the Yanks defeated the Pio’s 5-4. The win snapped a six-game slide, and was the Yankees second win in three attempts against the fourth place Pioneers. The loss drops Elmira to nine wins and eight losses.
Brown struck out two and walked none.
Bryan Gardner (Fairport/Ithaca) came on and slammed the door in the eighth. The left-hander got Mark Carlson(Lynchburg College) to pop out with the tying run on third to end the inning. Gardner struck out the side on nine pitches in the bottom of the ninth; he has twenty strike outs on the season.
Ryan Sullivan (Hilton/U of R) had the game-winning RBI in the eighth. With one out his single drove home Josh Johnson(Toledo University). Sullivan went two for four on the night with two runs batted in. Playing catcher he also threw out two would-be base-stealers.
Sullivan was not the only Yankee to provide timely defense. Nelson Santos (Bishop Kearney / North Carolina A&T) had three put outs in the fourth including two impressive stops. One he went to his back hand to take away a hit from Wade Gaynor(Western Kentucky University). Santos ended the inning by leaping to snag a line drive off the bat of Brendan Wolfe.
Webster got on the board in fourth. Joe McIntyre (North Carolina A&T) had a one-out single. McIntyre advanced to second on a pass ball before Rob Lawler’s(Greece Olympia/Pitt) double brought home the first run of the game. Sullivan followed with an RBI single bringing home Lawler.
McIntyre added another hit in the fifth when he singled home Mark Stuckless (MCC). Stuckless finished the game two for five with an RBI double.
Shawn Bailey (Webster Schroeder / Mesa St.) chipped in with a single, stolen base, and a run scored. Bailey has had a hit in each of the last six games.
Adam Curynski (Webster Schroeder/So. Illinois) got the win in relief. ‘Bomber’ pitched an inning and a third striking out one and giving up one unearned run.
Webster will look to avenge last weekend’s loss to the Brockport Riverbats. The Yanks will travel to Brockport for a 5pm game tomorrow.
