Bad habits are sometimes hard to break. For the Webster Yankees they are finding it hard to break the habit of being the victim of an NYCBL Player-of-the-Day performance. On June thirteenth Doug Ciallela scattered five hits over nine innings to shut out the Yankees. Then Eric Ferguson had a month in one day as he set an NYCBL record driving in seven runs with a six-for-six performance on Saturday. Tonight’s candidate for player of the day is Geneva’s Ashton Mowdy.
The Mustang, Oklahoma native took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before surrendering a leadoff single to Jason Stifler. Mowdy left the game but not before he struck out ten Webster batters. He allowed one earned run.
For Kevin Carmody tonight was another solid performance without much to show for his efforts. The Massapequa, New York native pitched six strong innings. He gave up two runs on four hits. Last week the Iona College star scattered six hits over seven innings. He got a no-decision in a game the Yanks won in extra innings.
Both pitchers struggled with the ninety degree temperatures and high humidity. Mowdy had difficulty finding his grip on the ball in the first inning and issued back-to-back walks to Joe McIntyre and Nelson Santos. Carmody showed some signs of fatigue from the heat in the fifth. After a one-out walk he hit Andrew Damewood with a pitch. Eventually he worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam.
Once again Webster demonstrated a never-say-die attitude. After being no-hit through seven and losing by a five to zero count Webster busted through with a rally.
Stifler broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single. Ryan Sullivan followed with a one-out single of his own. Shawn Bailey delivered an RBI single. McIntyre then drove home Bailey and Sullivan with a two-out single.
But that would be all for Webster. The club drops to four wins and twelve losses on the season.
The Yankees travel to Elmira tomorrow to play the Pioneers. Josh Brown gets his first start of the season.
