Rob Lawler’s one-out, walk-off double brought home Jason Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the thirteenth. Lawler’s hit, his second of the game and fifth in the last two games, preserved an impressive pitching performance as Webster defeated Bolivar 4 to 3.
Lawler’s triple in the second scored Johnson to give Webster a 2 to 1 lead. Ironically, Lawler only needed a triple on Sunday to hit for the cycle. The University of Pittsburgh standout scored one out later on a sacrifice fly by Mark Stuckless.
“I’ve shortened up my stride,” said Lawler when asked about his recent hot hitting which includes five hits in his last ten at bats. “The shorter stride allows me to see the ball better and stay quicker.”
Lawler has knocked in four runs over the last two games.
Joe McIntyre scored the other Yankee run. He led off the second inning with a double and scored on Johnson’s single.
While Lawler’s hit ended the game in dramatic fashion the Webster pitching staff did its job in quiet fashion. After a two-run home run off the bat of leftfielder Jacob Acey in the fourth, the hurlers held Bolivar in check for the last nine innings.
Kevin Carmody started the game and pitched seven strong innings. The Massapequa native struck out seven and walked three.
Josh Brown threw two innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Bryan Gardner worked the ninth. The Ithaca College star struck out two. He now has sixteen k’s in six and third innings pitched.
Jacob Bernath earned the win pitching the last four innings. Going back to Saturday Bernath has given up one unearned run over his last seven and a third innings pitched.
The Toledo University star struck out the last three batters he faced and six overall.
The win improves Webster’s record to four wins and seven losses.
“The first part of the season is over,” said coach, Mike Kelly. “We went three and seven. Tonight, we got the first win for the second ten games of the season; let’s see if we can go seven and three over the next ten games.”
Webster travels to Geneva to play the Red Wings tomorrow night at 7:30. ‘Bomber’ Curynski gets the start for Webster. Curynski is 1-0.
