NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton’s Amber Deane was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week. She was recognized for games played during the opening weekend of the regular season (Nov. 9-11).
Deane was named the Most Valuable Player of the Maggie Dixon Classic after scoring a career-high 27 points in the championship game against host No. 25 DePaul. Deane, who shot a blistering 80 percent from the field on the weekend, was perfect in her first half of college basketball against MVSU. She went 5-for-5 from the field, including 2-for-2 in the first half against the Devilettes. Deane’s 27 points against No. 25 DePaul tied for fourth most points in a single game for a freshman at UD. She tied the mark of 27 set by Justine Raterman on Nov. 16, 2008.
Deane was also named the College Sports Madness High-Major Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and the Sports Madness A-10 Player of the week for her exceptional performance.
The Flyers are also receiving nine votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll.
In addition, the University of Dayton women’s basketball team was tabbed ESPN’s “Team of the weekend” after winning the Maggie Dixon Classic.
UD beat Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 9, 93-59, before taking down No. 25 DePaul, 92-80, in the championship game Nov. 10.
The last time the Flyers scored at least 90 points in back-to-back contests came in December 2010 when they registered totals of 98 and 101 points against CSU-Bakersfield and Harvard, respectively. UD also is the only team in the country to have tallied 90-plus points in multiple games this season.
Dayton’s 92.5 points per game trails only North Dakota State’s 96.0 points per game mark for any team that has played at least two games.
The Flyers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 14 for their home opener against Toledo. Tip-off from UD Arena is at 7 p.m. ET. In honor of Military Appreciation Game, anyone who shows their military ID gets a buy 1 get 1 free ticket deal. The Flyers then host No. 13 Vanderbilt Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at UD Arena
