CLASS D

NO. 4 AVOCA PRATTSBURGH (12-3-1) 0
NO. 1 FILLMORE (17-0-0) 2

Brayden Walton led the way with a goal and an assist to send Fillmore to the Section V Class D championship. Levi Russell chipped in with a goal. Campbell Mucher contributed with an assist. Jared Boon made two saves in the Eagles’ 12th shutout of the season. Fillmore will face No. 2 Charles Finney in the championship on Friday.

“After a physical battle Friday night in the quarters, we knew Avoca-Prattsburgh would bring another hard-fought war of attrition tonight, and the game lived up to the billing,” said Fillmore head coach Jarrett Vosburg. “Their center-mid, Carter Button, is one of the best small-school players in the section.  He’s the complete package, so I was pleased with our ability to contain him defensively and limit his scoring opportunities.  We have leaned heavily on our defense all season, and tonight was no exception.  Our back four of Braylon Hatch, Carsyn Ross, Avery Potter, and Judah Russell played exceptionally well for us and were able to take a lot of the steam out of a potent AP offense that features several quick targets.

“Offensively, I was pleased with how we were able to win a lot of 50-50 battles at midfield to start our attack.  Brayden Walton was involved in both goals tonight, scoring the first off a feed from Campbell Mucher and assisting the second on a direct kick to the far post where Levi Russell finished.  These goals came less than seven minutes apart midway through the first half.  From there, we were able to mount a few more attacks, but the game was largely a back-and-forth battle for midfield.

“Our bench provided some great minutes for us tonight.  It was one of those games that makes you smile as a coach, because you feel like every player had something to contribute at a particular critical moment of the game.  While we are pleased to punch our ticket to the finals, we know we have an excellent C.G. Finney squad waiting for us Friday night, so we’ll get back to work tomorrow in preparation.”
