CLASS D
NO. 8 ARKPORT-CANASERAGA (6-11-0) 1
NO. 1 FILLMORE (17-0-0) 1 Adv. on PKs 4-3
Ezra Schilke gave Fillmore a 1-nil lead heading into halftime with an assist from Silas Russell. Owen Button converted a second-half penalty kick to level the match. Fillmore advanced on PKs.
“Tonight’s game featured two teams who played with heart and left everything they had on the field,” said Fillmore head coach Jarrett Vosburg. “We were able to get on the board with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half, when eighth-grader Silas Russell was able to beat his man to the corner and get a beautiful cross to freshman Ezra Schilke, who hit a great finish to the far post. That score would stand heading into the half.
“Five minutes into the second, Arkport-Canaseraga was awarded a PK on a 50-50 battle on the edge of the box, and Owen Button calmly converted. From there, we had chance after chance to regain the advantage but failed to convert. Credit their defense and goalkeeper, Eli Wright. He made some incredible, game-saving saves, while their back line cleared a couple balls off the goal line to keep it knotted at one. We generated 25 corner kicks on the game, including 14 alone in just the two overtime frames. The chances were there. We just have to execute a bit better moving forward.
“After 110 minutes of play, we were able to advance in the shootout, 4-3, with Brayden Walton, Judah Russell, Braylon Hatch, and Campbell Mucher scoring and Jared Boon making a huge save in goal on a ball that was headed just inside the post. At the end of the day, I’m proud of the boys for overcoming to stay alive on a night where things didn’t come easily. Section V has a lot of great competition, so anytime you are playing in the Sectional semis, it means something. We’ll enjoy that tonight, but get back to work Monday night in preparation for another tough battle Tuesday against an excellent Avoca-Prattsburgh squad.”
