ROCHESTER, N.Y. — After falling short in the 2025 Class A1 final to eventual state finalist. Brighton, Webster Schroeder football is looking to bounce back and bring home a Section V title for the first time in 17 years. Kalin Watkins Jr. is a key piece to the Warriors’ attack.

Last year the 6-foot-3 Watkins threw for 1,725 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for 349 yards and nine more touchdowns. The Second Team All-State selection broke a school record by throwing for 452 passing yards in a 37-20 win over Spencerport.

“I want to win that sectional championship and win the state championship,” the senior quarterback said during the recent Glory2Glory preseason media day.  “The experience, the mistakes, the losing, that all has helped me grow as a player. I look at it all as a blessing and I don’t let it bring me down I let it build me up.”

The quarterback mentioned how confident he is in his offensive line.

“I think we are going to be super dominant there.”

The difference he sees between last year and this upcoming season is the priorities Schroeder will have.

“We focused a lot on the (other) teams last year. This year I want to focus on ourselves and what we can do better. We try to get better every day and build as a team; everybody is all on the same page and we all love the game of football.”

Senior offensive lineman Bryson Terry also expressed his excitement about this upcoming season.

“When you are as close as we are with each other you are going to have success.”

For head coach Mike Stumpf, his team is not thinking about how 2025 ended. Rather it’s the possibilities this year presents.

“We don’t really focus on how last season ended. We’re really focused on how we’re going to become the best version of ourselves this year.”

One of Stumpf’s main points of emphasis is always how to get better every day and to take it one day at a time. He mentioned how even the “leaders” of his team still try to get better every day.

“Each and every day the kids got to come out and get one percent better and us as coaches’ one percent better and by the end of the year hopefully our goals will be met.”

Webster Schroeder hosts Rush-Henrietta on Friday, September 4th in the season opener for both teams. The Warriors travel to Fairport on Thursday, September 10th before returning home to face reigning Section V Class AA champion, Penfield on Friday, September.

Schroeder continues its season at Victor on September 25th then hosts Hilton and Greece Athena on October 2nd and 9th. The Warriors close the regular season on October 16th against Pittsford.
