Constantino Financial State Semifinal Preview: Fillmore to take on Oriskany for spot in Class D title game

One team has only lost once in its past 19 games. The other hasn’t lost all year and is looking to repeat as state champions.

Fillmore and Oriskany will meet Friday morning in a clash of Section V and Section III, with the winner securing a spot in the state championship game.

It’s a rematch of last year’s Class D state semifinals. Here’s the breakdown:

FILLMORE EAGLES (19-2/Allegany County I/No. 9 NYSSWA Class D)
vs.
ORISKANY SKYHAWKS (20-0/Center State III/No. 1 NYSSWA Class D)
Friday, Union-Endicott HS, 10:00 am

How they arrived here: Fillmore won 10-0 vs. Friendship-Scio, 16-1 against Alfred-Almond, and 9-3 over Elba to reach the Section V Class D title game. There, the Eagles took down Arkport-Canaseraga 5-2.  In the sub-regionals, Fillmore took down Ellicottville 9-4. In the state quarterfinals, the Eagles beat Schenevus/Charlotte Valley 8-3. Oriskany took down Belleville-Henderson (11-2) and Morrisville-Eaton (11-4) to secure a spot in the Section III Class D championship, where it won 8-4 over McGraw. The Skyhawks knocked off Heuvelton (X) 14-4 in the state quarterfinals to secure a spot in the state final four.

Scoring offense: Fillmore (9.5 RPG), Oriskany (10.7 RPG)

Scoring defense: Fillmore (2.1 RPG), Oriskany (2.9 RPG)

Trends: Fillmore is outscoring opponents by over six and a half runs per game in the past 10 games and has won 18 of the past 19 contests . Oriskany has not lost all season and has outscored its opponents 44-14 since the postseason started.

Players to watch for Fillmore: Jared Boon So. History 101: Fillmore is back in the state semifinals for the second season in a row. Last year, the Eagles fell 5-2 to Oriskany, who went on to win the Class D state championship.

What’s at stake: The winner advances to the NYS Class D semifinals to take on the winner of Duanesberg (II) and Bridgehampton (XI) on Saturday.
