Constantino Financial Softball Sub-Regional Preview: Mercy and Depew go head-to-head in Class A

One team is looking to reach the state quarterfinals for the sixth time since 2005. The other team is pushing to reach quarterfinals for the fifth time in program history. Our Lady of Mercy (V) and Depew (VI) will go head-to-head in the Class A sub-regional this Wednesday, June 3. Here’s the breakdown:

Class A

Wednesday, Honeoye Falls-Lima HS, 6:00 p.m.

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Our Lady of Mercy (NYSSWA Class A No. 15) defeated Newark (21-3) and Geneva (13-1) to reach the title game. In the Section V championship, the Monarchs walked off No. 2 Batavia 4-3 to earn a spot in the sub-regional. Depew (NYSSWA Class A No. 16) started its postseason run with a 5-0 shutout against East Aurora and notched a 5-1 victory over top-seeded Iroquois in the semifinals. In the Class A2 championship, the Wildcats defeated Lake Shore 7-2 and topped the A1 champs Starpoint in the regional qualifier 6-4.

Scoring offense: Our Lady of Mercy (8.4 RPG), Depew (8.4)

Scoring defense: Our Lady of Mercy (5.8 RPG), Depew (4.7)

Trends: Our Lady of Mercy heads into the sub-regional as winners in seven of its last eight matchups, outscoring its opponents 75-35. During that stretch, the Monarchs have scored 10-plus runs three times (six total) while holding opponents to under three runs throughout playoffs (seven total). Depew moves into the sub-regional on a four-game win streak, outscoring its opponents 23-7. The Wildcats have scored 10 or more runs on eight different occasions this season while holding opponents to two runs or less eight times as well.

History 101: Our Lady of Mercy makes its fifth state tournament appearance in program history and first since 2018. Depew, a state finalist in 2017, is looking for its second state quarterfinal bid in the past five years.

What’s at stake: A spot in the Class A NYS state quarterfinal against either Maine-Endwell (IV) or Seaford (VIIA).
