Bob McVean, who coached the Rochester Institute of Technology men’s basketball team for 40 years prior to his retirement in 2024, was inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) Hall of Fame earlier this month.
McVean, who won 613 games at RIT and Eisenhower College, was honored on April 19 at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls along with fellow inductees Brian Cross, Ben Drake, Kurt Ehrensbeck, Maurice “Mo” Hicks, Larry Jones, Bob Mayo and Al Monaco.
“This is an honor I share with all my players over the years, my dedicated assistant coaches and my family members who provided devoted support throughout my career,” McVean said.
McVean graduated from Pavilion Central School and played point guard on the Golden Gophers’ undefeated 1964 Section V Class C Championship team. He graduated from Brockport State in 1969 and landed the RIT job in 1984.
McVean compiled a record of 556-490 at RIT and ranked third on the list of active NCAA Division III coaches when he retired. McVean guided the Tigers to six 20-win seasons, five Empire Athletic Association titles, two Empire 8 championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances.
McVean is a two-time NABC East Region Coach of the Year and seven-time Empire 8 Coach of the Year. RIT, which was led by NCAA Division III National Player of the Year Craig Jones, advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 1997 NCAA Division III Tournament.
McVean is also a member of the Pavilion Central School, Wendy’s College Classic, ESL Ballpark and RIT Athletics halls of fame.
