Class C regional qualifier preview: Byron-Bergen and Holley to battle for spot in state quarterfinals

One team is looking to make a fourth trip in five years to the state quarterfinals while the other its second in three years. Genesee Region foes meet for the third time this season with a spot in the Far West Regional on the line. Here’s the breakdown:

HOLLEY HAWKS (13-6-1 / Genesee Region)
vs.
BYRON-BERGEN BEES (17-2-0 / Genesee Region)
Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Caledonia-Mumford High School

How they arrived here: Byron-Bergen beat Caledonia-Mumford (6-1), Bloomfield (3-0) and top-seeded Kendall (1-0) to claim the Section V Class C2 championship. Holley beat Alexander (6-1), Red Creek (2-1), top-seeded Geneseo (1-0) and Canisteo-Greenwood (2-1) to clinch the Section V C1 title.

Total goals scored: Holley (61), Byron-Bergen (110)

Total goals allowed: Holley (24), Byron-Bergen (18)

Trends: Kendall enters on a 15-game win streak, after dropping the second game of the season. Byron-Bergen has won 11 in a row and posted seven clean sheets during that stretch. Holley is riding a four-game win streak in which the Hawks have outscored opponents 18-2.

Regular season meetings: Byron-Bergen won both meetings scores of 5-0 and 5-3.

Players to watch for Byron-Bergen: Mia Gray Sr. University of Florida commit (41 goals/leads Section V, 23 assists/Section V leader with 105 points); Grace DiQuattro Sr. (28 goals, 24 assists); Elizabeth Starowitz Sr. (13 goals, 20 assists); Anastasia Kuszlyk 8th (14 goals, six assists); Rylee Burch Jr. (65 saves, 18 goals allowed, 1.00 GAA); Ava Goff Sr.; Emma Mathews Jr.; Lucy Rea So.; Megan Jarkiewicz.

Holley: Ava Mosier So. (15 goals, 5 assists); Hanna Ostrom So. (8 goals, 5 assists); Mia Thom Sr. (4 goals, 7 assists); Jayna Burris So. (5 goals, 9 assists); Zoey Warner So. (55 saves, 23 goals allowed, 1.28 GAA).

Coaches: Renee Wolf (Holley), Wayne Hill (Byron-Bergen)

History 101: Last time these leagues foes met in the post-season, Holley took a 3-2 decision in the 2023 Class C regional qualifier. The Hawks advanced to the state semifinals that year. Byron-Bergen, the reigning NYS Class C champion, is looking to make its fourth regional appearance in five years.

What’s next: The winner advances to face Section VI champion, Wilson (17-1-0) in the New York State Class C Far West Regional.

A 6:30 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Caledonia-Mumford High School on Tuesday.
