ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Ella Shamp found the back of the net three times including the go-ahead score as No. 5 Batavia (10-6-2) went on the road and beat No. 4 Greece Olympia (10-6-1), 5-1 in Section V Class A quarterfinal action on Saturday afternoon.
With the score level at one late in the first half, Shamp gained possession along the left flank, split a pair of defenders, cut toward the middle of the 18-yard box and went near post to give the Blue Devils a lead they did not surrender.
“Everyone in the back did a good job of sending the ball up to me,” the senior forward said. “I knew I had to finish it to make sure we get the lead. My teammates trust me, so I have to finish for them.”
She scored back-to-back goals late in the second half to give the Blue Devils breathing room.
“We had a lot of momentum,” Shamp said. “During halftime, we said we have to get it done. We didn’t want overtime again. Last year in the semis (against Pittsford Sutherland), we lost in overtime (2-1). We knew we wanted to take advantage of the momentum that we had.”
Batavia had gone unbeaten in four of six games from late September into October before dropping back-to-back decisions to Our Lady of Mercy (another Class A semifinalist) and Greece Athena to end the regular season.
“In those games, we played very well together,” Shamp said. “We worked on a lot of defending, playing together and looking for each other to connect passes. That showed today that we worked on that at the end of the season.”
London Martin converted off an Adyson O’Donnell corner kick to give Batavia a 1-nil lead with 34:29 remaining in the first half.
Two minutes later, Jenna Christensen leveled the match for Olympia.
Shamp won a foot race along the right wing for her second goal of the game. She completed the hat trick with 14:16 left in the match when she stayed far post on O’Donnell’s corner kick from the right flag. Shamp used a pair of touches before she sent a right-footed strike into the opposite side netting.

Shamp leads Batavia with 27 goals on the season.
“Our team is very good together. We work really well. We all depend on each other. We are very connected right now in the season. We trust each other.”
O’Donnell capped the scoring for Batavia.
With the win, Batavia advances to face top-seeded Aquinas in the semifinals. The Blue Devils’ matchup with Aquinas is scheduled for Wednesday. Time and location are to be announced.
