BROCKPORT, N.Y. — Lucy Peters finished with a hat trick as No. 9 Brighton (7-9-0) went on the road and defeated No. 8 Brockport (8-8-1), 6-1 in Section V Class AA Girls’ Soccer action, Wednesday night.
Peters started the scoring. The junior midfielder’s second goal came with little more than two minutes remaining in the first half and sparked an offense that found the back of the net four times in less than 12 minutes of game time.
“That gave us momentum,” said Brighton head coach Rita Kladstrup. “I have girls that when they are ready, they are going to go.”
Hillary Ostar connected with :08 seconds remaining before halftime then scored again less than eight minutes after coming out of the break.
Peters put the game out of reach in the 50th minute with her team-leading 18th goal of the season.
“We work all the time on passing combinations in practice,” Peters said. “We know where to find each other. Our team chemistry is great. Our quick speed of play helped us get those goals.”
The two teams had not faced each other during the regular season and have not met since at least before the 2020 season.
“We didn’t know what they were going to be like,” Peters said. “We had to come out and play our game. Play quick 1-2 touches, set the tone for the game and get our intensity going.”
The offensive output was a season-high for the Bruins who entered play averaging less than three goals per game.
Kladstrup said the focus in pre-game was like it has been all season.
“This year, we’ve really been trying to stick to our game plan and not focusing so much on others. We don’t want to change our dynamic. I knew they were going to fight hard to the end. We came out ready to go.”
Anna Miller had a goal and two assists in the win. Sadie McLeod also set up a pair of goals. Ostar accounted for one assist.
